Another bothersome axle question

on my 300 u, I removed, cleaned, inspected and repacked the outer axle bearing. Got it put back in, and got a new oring to seal the hub to the inner bearing race. Here's my question, on the bearing cap it houses the axle seal(actually seals the hub, but same difference). Now out from that there is on full channel in the cap followed by another half channel. These are both outside of the oil seal. They are packed with stuff. at first glance the one almost looks like felt, but easily is falling apart, as parts of this stuff are missing. It breaks apart unlike felt. The exploded parts view shoes nothing besides the seal in this cap. Is it just 50 year old grease and grime and I';m just overly concerned? What is the point of these 2 channels? Should I clean them out?

Thanks for any info.

I believe the felt seal is for the purpose these guys mentioned. I also agree, it probably does not matter if it is replaced or not. My parts manual shows them, part # 60627D, if you want to check with dealer.

When these old tractors were built, most of the seals had a sealing lip made of leather. It was common practice to add a felt seal on the outside of the leather lip to help keep the dirt from wearing out the seal. As the seals were updated to rubber style seals the felt was usually left out.

Figured it out!! in reply to JayWalt, 04-23-2007 13:26:08
Took a small screwdriver and pressed on the crap and it IS felt. as soon as any pressure is put on it, the surface gets "wet", moist like from the oil in the grease it has soaked up. I'm just going to wipe it off and put it back on. There is still a piece on the bottom gone tho, but out well. Kinda odd the exploded view doesnt show the felt, but the felt probably comes already installed in the cap. Probly had to spend 50 on a new cap just for that felt seal. I say had, cause im pretty darn sure they arent available anymore (parts site has them retired).

Try a bearing house for bulk felt. Cut out your own. I made felt dust seal washers for my single front wheel SC. CIH wanted nine bucks each.

That's the anti-squeak gasket. Sounds like it's gone bad and that's what was causing your axle to squeak.

Naw, just funnin' with ya :)

If I were in your shoes, given the fact that the parts book shows nothing, I'd just conclude that the gunk was gunk, clean it out, and put everything back together.

thanks man. I was 99% sure that was the case, but I just dont wanna do something to mess it up ya know =)

When I first read youyr post I was like WTF? Even if you didnt tell me you were joking, there no way I would believe ya, anti sqweak gasket? HAHA

I think its either an artifiact from earlier designed or different models, or they are there to trap grease seepage which in turn would hel keep any dirt from the oil seal which would harm it.
