I am looking at rebuilding a 2444 dsl engine that is in a 3414 backhoe. It has a crack in one of the sleeves. The guy tore it down a number of years ago All of the parts seem to be there, maybe a little rusty. I know that I will have to buy a rebuild kit. The backhoe was working fine before he tore it down.I am not a diesel mechanic. Any advice? Is this possibly a money pit that when I finish, I still don't have a backhoe worth anything? Thanks

I'm fixing up a IH 3444 with the BD-154 diesel, for the engine parts you will have to go to Case IH and for the rest of the machine Kamatsu. Hydraulic seals are sometimes hard to find since they have stopped making some of them. It's still a great machine and will probly last forever once you repair it and maintain it properly. They are built to last. Not like the throw away stuff made these days. Good Luck.

Craig, you say that I will have to go to Case IH for engine parts. I have been pricing engine overhaul kits (sleeves/pistons) from yesterday tractor and ebay stores. Are these comparable in quality? Any advice on removing the sleeves?

I have not priced the rebuild kits yet, so I can't say. I have had to order gaskets and other parts for the engine from Case IH. I have the engine running and hope to get some use out of it before a rebuild. My latest challenge has been to get all the leaks fixed on the hydraulics. I would suggest if you haven't already doing a search on the BD-154 engine on YT, I'm sure others have some great advice.
