I could use some help diagnosing what just went wrong with the engine in my 424D I will readily admit what I know about diesels and 50 cents will get you a cup of coffee in a cheap restaurant. I did a little disking with it the other day and it ran fine. Then yesterday I started it and it belched black smoke on startup, Lugged like it was running on three cylinders and gradually picked up RPM. The tone of the engine is now louder. It almost seems like the sound is comming out the exahust. Every time I go to accelerate the engine it blows out black smoke and gradually picks up RPM when it gets up to RPM the smoke stops. Any ideas?

1.) Restricted fuel filter or other fuel flow resitriction. (Check for a clogged air filter, or nesting vermin in the air intake system, too.)

2.) Injector failure (probably stuck "open").

3.) Injection pump failure, perhaps advance mechanism.

4.) Engine mechanical failure... valve, piston, head gasket.

Comming back up to the barn the tractor was overheating and blowing antifreeze up on the hood. Makes me think maybe your 4th comment, Headgasket, might be the thing.

You may be new to Diesels, but you must know that they use the heat generated by compression to fire the charge.

What you may not know is that if WATER gets into the combustion chamber, the same heat from compression can cause it to flash over into steam BEFORE the piston reaches top dead center.

This creates a situation where the engine is trying to operate as a Diesel running forward and a steam engine running backwards. VERY destructive to the crank, pistons, head, connecting rods, etc., etc.

Thus the elaborate precautions and maintenance procedures to keep water OUT of the fuel system of Diesels.

I don't think it's happened to your tractor yet; you'd probably know if it had. I would strongly advise you to fix that gasket now so it doesn't!
