Howdy, boys. Time to buy a rotary cutter. I am looking at a KingKutter. (1) Will the 72" be a good match for the SH on an improved pasture? (2) What about the gearbox rating on the mower - they offer 40hp and 60hp rated boxes. Should I get the 60, or is that not necessary? I want to buy the right one the first time. Thanks, as always. mike

A safety reminder. Please use caution with bush hogs. Tractor fenders are highly recomended, and make sure all driver seat bolts are in place and secure.

I was about 9 years old when a fellow working for my Dad let his 12 year old son ride with him on a fenderless M, while bushogging. Tractor wheel hit a hole, the boy went under the mower, and well... it was just awful, of course he died.

Our tractor went into the barn and did not come out till equipped with fenders. That situation is seared into my brain forever. Walter

I know of a couple that have also been killed from riding on tractors. A boy I grew up with was riding a lawn mower with his mother when he was 3 years old and fell off. He lived but lost a leg. He wears a wooden leg and you can't even notice a limp. When we were kids if he got mad at someone he would take that leg off and throw at you. NEVER ALLOW KIDS TO RIDE ON FARM EQUIPMENT WHILE WORKING.It is not worth the possible outcome.

Mike, when it comes to mowers the heavier the better. The Super H will handle a 7 foot mower in any thing you put it in. The slip clith and over running clutch on the tractor shaft are needed. With the over running clutch you will be able to stop when you want to. It will also make it possible to change gears without waiting for the mower to wind down. Folks seem to think you need a big tractor to pull a mower. I have pulled a 15 foot BMB heavy duty mower for years with a M it will mow almost anything including bushes and small trees. My father in law use to pull a 7 foot bushhog brand mower with a B. I now pull that same mower with my C and Super C. Unless grass is really thick and tall I have no problem at all pulling the 7 footer with either tractor.

I use to sell brush hog per say and for a super H in good condition just mowen pastrue a 7 footer would be no problem and go with the bigger gear box . also add the slip clutch shear bolts are a pain as the day will come when ya just have a weeee bit more to do and you will eat a shear bolt and will not have the correct bolt and since ya only have a weee bit to do this here old grade 8 will work till i can get to town and get some more shear bolts , and that my friend will be the day that ya find that old tree stump or that old hard rock that ya forgot about and pice of the gear box go flyen all over the place. Now if you do get a slip clutch always remember to back off the springs when ya put it way for the season and keep it covered the rest to help keep moisture out so it does not rust soild. Ya want a hog wide enough to get out past the tires and on a S/H always use and over running clutch on the PTO. Oh yea also make sure that it has a stump jumper . I use to sell the International Machinery line and in MHOP they were the best of the short line as they were built heavier and had a littel better product support.

BINGO! on the hog made by International Machinery. I have a 5' that I've had since 1991 and it's a rugged unit. Outside of replacing blades, all I ever had to do to it was get the cover welded where a guy who borrowed it abused it. I mow about 25 acres of pasture that is full of multi-flora rose and also do a little custom work. Orignially used it behind a Super C with a 3 pth kit and lately behind a JD A with a Saginaw 3p. kit, ORC's on both.

Tractor Vet. I suppose this queation is a little odd but here goes. Mowing the 25 acres, with the 5 foot how long does it take and about how much gas does it take to do the job.

I used to have a SH and traded it for an M. With both I have used the same 5' KK mower (wish I had bought a 6', but it was about $300 more) I think the 40 HP box will be fine. I have used that mower for about ten years and have had NO problems yet. I used it to clear my land when I first bought it. I mowed over a lot of 1-2" cottonwood trees, multiflora, and honeysuckle. Did you know that those KK mowers also come with a rock finder option? I have found every rock on the place. Other that some dings on the sides from hitting rocks and a shear bolt now and then, I would have no problem buying another KK.

im with everybody else when it comes to the gearbox. You know they dont make things like they used to. that 60hp gearbox is probably equivelant to a 40hp of 20 years ago. It's just a shame how they overrate things now a days. Like everyone has said, If you can swing it get the 60hp

Mornin Mike, A 6ft bush hog should be a good match for the Super H. I would get the heavy duty model if you can swing it. Keep in mind that if your field is real high and your going to be pulling some steep hills you may have to take slightly less tha a 6 ft cut.

The SH ought to handle the 72" mower with ease.
Be sure you use the over ride clutch on it though. The over 40 HP gear box ought to be the way to go.

City-Boy, That 6 ft shredder will work fine behind a Super H. I would opt for the 60 hp gear box. There is No substitute for Strength, Steel, Hp, Etc,Etc, well yo get the picture. You may need to use that shredder in a rougher pasture, or someplace else where a light duty mower just will not cut the Mustard! Good luck!
Later,
John A.
