H belly pump interchangeable hydraulics

I'm getting ready to change the fluids in my '49 H this weekend and read that ONLY SAE 30 non-detergent oil should be used in the internal hydraulics, due to "wide" clearances in the belly pump.

I presume that this means the H hydraulics can not be used with "modern" hydraulic equipment that would use Hy-Trans or other hydraulic oil...

So what's the right thing to do here?...
a) Use SAE30 and get a different tractor to run hydraulic equipment.
b) Use Hy-Trans or equivalent and chance a low pressure condition and inadequate seals (for the thinner oil) on the factory loader.
c) Not worry about it and mix the two (This just sounds WRONG to me)
d) Something else?

Thanks in advance,

Nathaniel

Thanks, guys. What you're sayin' makes sense. I picked up a bucket of oil (ok, several) last night to change all the oil this weekend. The previous owner couldn't tell me where to fill the hydraulics, so I hope everything is in decent shape still.

I will probably flush the diff / tranny with diesel, since there is fresh rust on the bottom of the diff / tranny fill plug. :(

Its going to take a while to get the old thing whipped into shape, but one step at a time...

if you are really going to use the old h i would and have updated the poor old thing i have a 1949 h that now has a full hydraulic loader {lift and tilt} then it was a bear to steer so i added power steering and live power well that worked real good what else could i use? how about a three point hitch thats great working just fine anything else? yea how about remotes ? yea thats the ticket. i think theres is a wide front in my old h future. now i can do just about anything with my 49 that can be done with modern tractor of the same size on the down side my neibors call my h Egor

The other guys are right. The only real argument for using 30wt instead of the lighter Hy-Tran (I don't count "correctness" as a real argument in this case) is that the heavier oil could allow the old pump to produce more pressure. I've checked the pressure from my H's Liftall with Hy-Tran (750 psi) and 30wt non detergent (750 psi) now, and there's as you can see.
Good luck, and run whatever's convenient.
Wm

Either will work fine. When the tractor was new HY-Tran didn't exist. The book says SAE 10 weight during cold weather and 20 to 30 as warmer weather comes. As long as it is non detergent it will not hurt to mix a little here and there.

You're talking about the belly pump hydraulics, right?

I don't have the manual with me now, but when I read the owners manual (a new, licensed re-print), I was sure it said SAE 30 for the hydraulics... (hence my question).

The various weights sounds familiar for the engine oil.

That is for hydraulic system. Do not put 10 weight oil in your engine. Use Hy Tran in your hydraulic system and you won't need to worry with it.

They didn"t update the manual over the years. All it is, is a word-for-word reprint of the original manual that was last updated sometime in the late 1940"s or early 1950"s.

HyTran is perfectly fine. Just drain out the old oil and refill with HyTran.

Thanks. I get along with some of the neighbors very well, and though I don't have any immediate plans to borrow any equipment, I don't want to lock myself out of that option in the future. And I'd rather not have to dump the hydraulic oil in a couple months. ;->

The real beauty of those belly pumps is that they really don't care what oil is in them. Not saying you should dump just anything in there, but changing over to Hy-Tran will be just fine.

IH service manager said I could use HyTran for the hydraulics and transmissions in all my Farmalls. M,300 and 706. Worked ok for me.
