986 Electrical Problems

Recently I have found myself faced with dead batteris when I go to start my 986. If I charge them up and let it sit over night, it's fine. When running, it doesn't take too long until the voltage has fallen way off. I've checked the voltage at the large lug on the alternator, and it's reading about 9V when running, 11.6 when off. Since I don't have a wiring diagram, I'm not sure where else to look. Before I replace the alternator, does anyone have a suggestion (the belts are tight)?

Thanks.

Thanks folks. I checked the voltages at the alternator as dwag suggested. With the batteries fully charged and key off, I have 12.6V at 1 spade of the alternator and nothing on the other. With the key on, I have 4V at the other spade. The concensus is leaning toward replacing it. I replaced the batteries and cables last year, right after we got the tractor. This problem showed up suddenly a couple of weeks ago. Sounds like the alternator croaked.

Trickle chg batt"s overnight and check voltage. Must have 12+ volts at batt"s and same at alt. Also feel batt"s after charging, if one is warm, batt is shorted internaly, same for alt. #2 (right spade) terminal on top of alt should have elec\hot all the time while #1 terminal(left spade) "hot" only when key is on. An alt should put out 14+ volts with fully chgd batt"s.
