OK boys. I got a question. I couldn't find "Washing Soda" anywhere. I got some Arm and Hammer laundry detergent. It say it contains, Anionic and nonionic surfactants, and sodium carbonate. Is this the right stuff?

 I found it! in reply to BF8690, 04-28-2007 12:25:00
I found the washing soda at the Comissary on Base. It was the only place in town that had it.

All the rust will be gone and the metal will have turned black.

The surfactants "may" assist with degreasing your part. I do not know if it will interfere with the electrlisis. If you use this stuff instead of the straight sodium carbonate, I would like to suggest to you that you put a part that is both greasy and rusty in the bath and let us know the results.

What you want is sodium carbonate. Also called soda ash. You can get at some farmer's co-op stores where they sell feed, fertilizer, etc. in 50 lb bags. Failing that go to Walmart to the swimming pool supplies and get Ph up which is used to increase Ph in swimming pools. It will come in a 4 or 5 pound plastic jug and will tell you right on the label that it is 98 percent sodium cabonate or some such. Also you can get it at a home supply store such as Lowe's or Home depot that have pool supplies or any pool supply house.

Have just tried electrolis on rusted old front wheels. I have been amazed at how it works. Used arm and hammer washing soda. it was with laundry detergent. Emailed fit web site (frank in tallasahee) who started us guys on llectrolis he said since lye was no longer available to use a little drano as sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate is what works best. Just read lables do not use liquid drano an has other stuff in it. Time is your allie let it take a week of necessary. I used strips of plumbers tape for postives and was amazed after 4 days on more tape!!! was completely destroyed. Be sure to hook NEGATIVE to what you want cleaned!!!
