I went to take the battery out to replace it with a new one and noticed it had been hooked up with the ground cable hooked onto the positive post on the battery and the positive cable hooked onto the negative post on the battery. A friend said it may have reverse polarity. He said it would have burnt it up if it was hooked up wrong. Is this true? I had been having trouble with starting it up and keeping it running. Would this have anything to do with it? Is it safe to hook it up the way it was?

If it's a 6 volt battery it was connected correctly with the battery being positive grounded. You need the check the charging voltage at the battery using a volt meter set on
dc volts. Run the engine at 3/4 throttle and your voltage should be around 7.0-7.25 volts.

The older Farmall's and cub's used positive ground on their ignition systems
