resistor information needed

I just rewired a Farmall A so I could use a 12 volt battery on it. The problem I have is that it keeps burning out my resistors. I currently have NAPA (I believe this is the part number) ICR13SB in line at the coil, but I have already burned out one and the other one is smoking. What is a good large resistor that I can add so that I won"t keep burning these out? Any part numbers would be helpful.

I would buy the 12 volt coil from NAPA that has the builtin resistor. Their part number is 1C14SB
and the cost is around $40.00. Hal

If the resistor keeps burning up. There is a wiring problem. Most likely not the resistor(s).

My guess is that one side of the resistor is shorted/ground.

Jesse,
Why not buy a true 12 volt coil and you won"t need any resistor

Be sure to put the resister between the switch and the coil.....the resister should be able to cut the 12v to 6 no problem.....i guess your using the old 6v coil.....

AutoZone part no. AL795 works well. I've used them on several 12 volt conversions and have never had a problem.

Be aware the resistors DO get hot in operation - and they will smoke briefly the first time you power 'em up! Also be sure to bolt the resistor to a solid piece of metal (NOT the gas tank!). They depend on this to help dissipate the heat.

From that picture it looks like you wired it wrong. There should be NO resister come from the big post on the alternator. Now yes there should be a resister going from the ignition switch to the coil but none hooked to the alternator unless its in line with the #1 wire from the small plug in and then thats just to keep it from back feeding so you can turn off the engine. Most people use a lite or diode in the wire to do the same thing

I like 'em where I can get to 'em without turning the whole tractor upside down.. Plus the fan keeps them cool. I went to the junk yard many moons ago and got dozens of the ballasts for $10. Until the bucket is empty, I'll still use "em

Haveing them easy to get to is ok but if you wired them wrong like it looks in your picture then yes they will burn up fast. The 14 or so volts from the alterntor plus the 20-60 amps will smoke a resister very fast plus you don't get the voltage you need to charge the battery

The picture looks like he is cutting the voltage in half twice.....12 to 6 to 3 ..... ..

Yep thats what I'm seeing and putting a resistor or 2 there they will burn up fast with the alternator voltage plus the 20-50 amp it puts out means a brun up resister

Well in the picture it looks wrong but you can't tell 100% sure which wire goes where

He wanted to see or know of some heavier resistors. I just showed him what I have..

Don't shoot the messenger...
