I am looking at an IH 424 gasoline tractor, condition seems very good, no oil used or leaked apparently and according to seller. Seemed to run and operate about like new, pretty quiet. Appearance of metal and paint relatively good.

Comes with a decent condition brush hog and scraper blade.
I was impressed with the nice tractor.

Don't know the year, the older man owner said 1972 but I guess that can't be right.

My question is what is what is this rig worth. I am pretty sure the $3650 he is starting at is considerably too high, including the implements?

I also have a 424 Gas and use it a lot. Nice easy to operate and will run forever on a tank of fuel. That is a good price in this area of Virginia especially with the blade and rotary mower included

Re: OR IH 300 value in reply to Max Door, 04-30-2007 15:23:27
Thanks for the input... I am now likely going to buy my uncle's 1956 300, it is mechanically very good, needs brakes on one side and the ignition switch replaced (lost key), no power steering. Does have fast hitch and good hydraulics, fairly straight sheet metal, ok tires, comes with brush hog, scraper blade, plow, various other implements, for $1500. It had been restored by IH dealer before my uncle got it 20 yrs ago or so, needs re-restored now to be pretty again.

You guys think this is a good deal?

Yes that is a good deal on the 300. They are great tractors as well. The 300 isn't near as hard to steer as an old M. The 300 will do anything the 424 will and more. The fasthitch makes hooking to implements a breeve. It is a good idea to keep your uncles tractor.

that price doesn't seem out of line at all to me.. I gave $3500 for my 424 gasser about 4 years ago, good tires, good sheetmetal, mechanically sound with very little paint left on it.. Has been a great tractor, the more I use it, the more attached I am to it..

Last fall at auction a 464 gas needing carb work but running fine just rich went for 2100. Pretty similar tractor. I think the ih utilities are the finest made, especially the 84 series. but theyre all very reliable.

I have an IH 424. With a grader blade, 6 foot 3 pt brush hog and mounted 3 bottom plow. The rear tires are loaded and she is heavy. Heavier than my M. The mower is a bit much for the tractor, not HP wise but weight wise. Had to replace the hydraulic pump with a larger one so that it"d lift it off of the ground and even then with 4 90 lb suitcase weights on the front it"ll bounce the front end. My 424 has hydraulic steering also. All that said i wouldn"t take what this gent is asking... It is a very handy tractor for small tillage and mowing as well as doing various chores.

If that tractor is as good as you say, it is worth that.. I seen a 424 gas with a 5 foot 3 point mower bring 5040 dollars at an auction. a couple of years ago. And it comes with implements. Offer him 2000 and see were it goes.

I should mention that the tractor does not have power steering, but it was not hard to steer, linkage seemed smooth.

I think you did mention that in the first post. I don't think that is a real big factor in a tractor of this size. Power steering is nice, but I still wrestle two or three without it around myself. Make sure to check for water in the oil and anything else that may be wrong. Run it enough to warm it up to chack temp and hydraulic operation, play in steering and so on. Good luck.

Well, he showed me one of the steering linkage ujoints had a little play in it, the one right in the middle about 14 inches long. When I drove the tractor I couldn't tell anything. I guess assume that part is bad.

I have a IH424 no power steering and I have had it for 20 years. With no problems, just normal maintenance. 3600 is a good price. The tractor is easy to run ,cheap to operate. And it is easy to get parts for. So for a little money you can get a good tractor that will do every thing you need it to do. Good Luck
