Farmall A fuel problem

Hello, this is my first time visit ing this site. I have a 1946 Farmall A used for a one acre garden (plow, disk and cultivate). This year, while plowing, the tractor would continually cut out. After exhausting plow adjustments (set too deep, too far left), I began thinking that it was not getting proper fuel flow. It would always re-start fine, but then would seem to surge and then lose power and eventually cut out again. We drained the bowl under the fuel tank and removed quite a bit of sediment. That helped, but did not solve. Also, it seems to run fine briefly after the tractor has sat (overnight), but then gets progressively worse once it starts happening. I am not a mechanic, so I do not know what to check next. Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks, Glen Lovelace, Seaford, DE.

Well lets start at the tank and work back. First remove the sediment bowl and use something to catch the gas. Open up the valve and make sure you get a good steady flow of gas for 5 minutes. If you do then put the bowl back on and take the line loose at the carb and check for flow for 5 minutes. If you get good flow there then go to the carb and on the bottom is a drain plug do the flow test again. If you get good flow at all 3 places then you have a problem in the carb and may need to rebuild it. If you loose flow before the carb then you have a problem either in the tank of the line is clogged. Remove the line and clean it out and or remove the sediment bowl assembly and clean out the tank. Post back if you need more help

Rusty gas tank or the fuel cap is not venting properly. Try running with the fuel cap off or loose.

What KIND of Sediment? in reply to Glen Lovelace, 05-01-2007 07:24:28
If you found fine rust particles, you may have a rusty gas tank.
