I have read through the archives and not found what i was looking for. I could use some help. We just got my 400 running and it tends to miss when not under a load. If you idle up and run it in gear it seems to quit. I have had my brother-in-law check it out as he is a much better carb man than me. We have not had any luck. New points, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, 2 diferent coils. we have cleaned the carb 3 times, as this tractor has been sitting for several years. I installed an inline filter the last time to catch any debris that makes it through the dediment bowl. Seems to have plenty of gas. I was wondering if the governor is out of adjustment or maybe sticking. The throttle lever is loose for the first half of the span then tightens up considerably. My manual is in the mail. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Lee

A worn out or close to worn out distributor will cause those symptoms. The bushings and the shaft will develop "play", and then the spark is delivered at varying intervals instead of the exact interval. The advance weights and springs also need to be in good condition. Also, weak valve springs will cause problems such as you describe while the engine is idling or at a low load or no load condition, and seem to work fine while under a load.

My occasional miss at idle was cured by setting the timing at idle by ear until the engine smoothed out and rpm picked up slightly. Seems that timing by the book is usually slightly off. A slightly rough idle, as stated by Jim is normal. Also, the max power setting of your carb is obtained by turning the main jet 5 turns out, it can be turned in 1 or 2 turns for better economy. I doubt if this affects the idle though.

Lee try retarding the timing.Maybe out of specs but might idle good if so it may be as simple as a dirrerent brand or heat range plug.I'm not suggesting to leave it that way but just for experimental purposes.

The farmall engine (A B C H M W4 W6 X00, and X50 as well as others) are running carburetors that are stone age technology. They feed in enough fuel to operate, but are no way scientific about it. They work best under load, where the engine is fundamentally pumping volumes through the combustion chamber. Unburned fuel from combustion chamber quench at idle, combined with straight through exhaust, and richer than nominal mixture causes micro back firing in the exhaust pipe with no cylinder miss at all. this causes the popping sound, the rain cap to dance, and (at night down a hill,) quit a visual display. It is not fixable, it is not broken. A real miss will be consistant, on one cylinder, not bad timing, or distributor bushings, and usually happens at various speeds. An intake leak can also cause idle miss, but again it will be consistant. If a tach placed on the ignition shows no dip in RPM, you are looking at the nature of the beast. JimN

Make sure the gap in the points are .020 on the opening. I have found that putting a small lock washer to the the point helps..
