Had the same problem with a C153 in a 504. Just finished rebuilding it. Had the crank turned, new rod and main bearings, sanded the pot metal oil pump cover, (had to take .014 off of it), made a strap to go between the two bolts on the high pressure side of the pump to reinforce the cover. 55psi hot and full throttle, 35psi idling.

A friend recently rebuilt the C153 in his 2444. He did not replace the pump. and had low oil pressure. He had a machine shop flatten the cover plate on the oil pump and that fixed it up nicely.
The oil pumps seem to be ahrd to find rebuilts and not too cheap.

Of course your results might vary.

Befor you get all carried away i would put a new guage that reads lbs and see what that does for the readings not unusal for them to have weaker oil pressure when warm as it could be many different things.Maybe mite even want to try straight 30wt.

You might want to check and see if the gasket on the bottom of the pump is blown out. My B did the same thing.

Too low!
You need to check out why the pressure is low. The cover on the oil pump is prone to bow out a bit and cause low pressure. Could be suction screen, worn bearings, etc. You will probably need to drop the pan.

What type/weight of oil are you useing?? If you useing a muti weight oil that doesn't help you becasue its a lighter weight oil. If you se a 30W or 40W oil that will help keep the pressure up some but its still a stop gap fix for worn parts

If for the summer you switched to a 40W or even a 50W it would help the pressure a lot. I have one tractor that I use 50W in it all the time but it also doesn't get started in the winter, sure did help it a lot but its also got the same rings in it that where there when new

I always thought "modern" multi weight oils were "multi weight". 10W-30 at operating temp has the same "thickness" as 30W at operating temp. The differance between the two was that multi grade oil loses some some of its high temperature viscosity as it ages at high temps - the reason why you should change your oil every 3000 miles.

Well a muti weight oil say a 10W-30 is really a 10 weight oil with additives to make it work more like a 30W oil so in theory yes its thicker but in an old engine it doesn't do as well as say a 30W or 40W will do to keep the oil pressure up

You may have a restriction like sludge over the pickup screen. The pump gears could be worn
or the pump housing. Your main bearings and cam bearings may be worn. Your oil passages may blocked keeping the oil from circulating. Hal

The cam is a problem on the C-153 and C-135, they don"t use renewable cam bearings. Replacing the cam during a rebuild helps, but they usually won"t hold good oil pressure without having a machine shop bore and fit replaceable bearings.

No Brilliant Idea... in reply to FARMALL66, 05-02-2007 11:41:11
...just an observation. As you may know, this kind of pressure behavior is very typical of a well-worn engine approaching but not quite yet arrived at the end of its term.

There are plenty of other potential causes; Hal, who knows his business, has given you some common ones, some of which (like worn bearings) might need to be properly attended to before the engine scars the crank or throws a rod.

Are you seeing any other symptoms of wear? A loss of compression? Blow-by? Bearing knock?

If you have no other symptoms, you can try heavier weight oil, Mystery Oil, etc., but most (although not all) people see those as temporary expedients designed to delay the inevitable.

If you have any of the above additional symptoms, you might want to begin to consider your options.

Your mains and rods are where most of your oil pressure is built. It might be time for a rebuild.
