I don't believe most of the things I am told before I try it...well...I have now tried the electrolisis for cleaning.

Yesterday, I threw the bonnet off an H into the solution and turned on the power. The piece was about as nasty as I have ever seen...needing sandblasting to clean it up...

Well, 24 hours later, I went down there and pulled it out of the tank--90 % of the rust was gone. The paint was softened so I took it out of the tank and hit it with my air driven wire brush...(about 2 in diameter rotating brush) The junk went flying everywhere..all paint gone in 5 minutes, after going over it with the brush, I put it back into the tank to let it cook some more. A few minutes ago, I went down there and pulled it out. All rust gone. Turned completely black. I am sold!

Is there a chemist on here? What is the black stuff?

I bought myself an 1800 psi electric pressure washer at Home Depot and use it to blow off all the loosened rust and paint. It is quicker and just about as effective as the wire brush. It also can get into nooks and crannies that a wire brush or scotchbrite pad cannot. My 2 cents

Tom, I"m not a chemist but Google says its black oxide layer- Fe3O4, or ferrous ferric oxide, aka magnetite. Remove with grey Scotchbrite finishing pads from 3M before you prime. Cheers Stan in TN

I tried it on a badly rusted manifold for my H and it worked like a champ. I'm sold on it as well. Right now I'm cleaning some parts for an old disc I bought at an auction.

Hurdy

I saw your big tank and you planted the seed for large parts when I saw you dunking the bonnet--I showed my neighbor your photos and he rounded me up a tank overnight. I am lucky to be here in the middle of an agricultural area where they use lots of chemicals...this container was a throw away.

I have done a lot of posts on here getting tips, etc. There is a man named FIT( on the JD site) who seems to be the Guru, Althoug there are lots of experts on this site also. Paint and grease just falls off. Rust takes a little longer, but the black stuff is just oxidation.. Use a bronze brush or scotch brite pad and was off under clear water. I am pleased with the process. You can just walk off an let it do its work. Gene

I am glad to hear it is working well. I am going to rig me up a set up like it and give it a whirl. I have lots of rusty junk that needs this. Do you suppose that the black stuff is iron coming off your steel . I was told yesterday thar brass plating works on the same principal. He claimed that a brass electrode placed there instead of steel would allow brass particles to come off the electrode and stick to whatever you had in there. He also said the brass particles would only stick were none was already.

You reverse the polarity to plate something.

I may even try that sometime. Are you home yet? I came by your place a few days ago and didn't see any sign of anybody.

On the electroplating, you might need some chemicals and treating of the item to be plated. Search on the web....
I do know for sure that the item to be plated needs to be extremely clean to get good plating.
