Super A has no voltage at coil?

Why is there no power at my coil and ignition switch? I have spent the last day and a half (with many interuptions and side problems)trying to get my Super A up and running. About a week ago I was digging some furrows to plant potatoes and as I got to the end of a row, I lowered the throttle and she stalled out. I figured it was something simple (ha ha ha) like a tune up and towed her to my shop, hasn't run since. I opened up the valve cover and a rod was off it's rocker arm (undamaged), I was hoping that I could just adjust the valves and it would be fine. Well I did that and now I have no spark at all. Also, before i tuned it up I replaced a Wico magneto with a IH distributor (it is from a 1950 SA, the one I am currently working on is a 1949). I tested the wire from the switch to the coil and it is fine. I put new points, condenser, plug wires, cap and rotor in and set the points correctly. The coil tested good. Also, if I am suppossed to have power at the coil, what should the voltage be? should it only show voltage if the switch is on (I tried both on and off) ??? Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks everyone for the advice. My SA is running better than it ever has. Thanks again.

I basically re-wired the whole electrical system and changed out the ignition switch.

JPM, Where are you located? I live in Davenport and finished restoring my 49 last year. If not too far, may be able to stop by and give you a hand.

I will pull the switch from my other super A and wire her up ...thanks...

Mark thanks for the offer but i live just outside of Olympia and that would be quite a drive from your side of the state.

JPM,
My understanding, from what you wrote, is that you changed over to a battery/coil ignition from a magneto. You didn't say you changed the ignition switch to a battery-ignition type. If you didn't change the switch:
You have no voltage at the coil wire because a magneto ignition switch grounds the magneto when the switch is off, and ungrounds the magneto and lets it fire when the switch is on (like many small engines). There is no battery power to a magneto as is required by a coil.
If you sould decide to try to 'hot wire' the coil, be sure to remove the wire at the coil that comes from the magneto ignition switch, else you will likely burn up some wires and no telling what else! So far as I know, there is no safe way to adapt a Super-A magneto ignition switch to supply power to a coil. They used different switches.
My opinion: Go back to the magneto, or get a battery-ignition switch and follow a wiring diagram to connect it all up. But that's your call. Hope this is helpful.

Gene,

Thats good info to know. Mine was already converted when I got it but I had noticed that YT and others sold differnt ignition switches for Super A's and others.

Even the conversion article here at YT doesnt mention it.

I think I might have learned something. Thanks!

Well you would not get any or very little voltage if the points are closed because they would ground out the system which is how it works. With the points open you should get battery voltage at the switch when on and at the coil. Fist thing I would do is hot wire it and see what happens. If it starts hot wired then you know you have a bad switch or wire from the coil back

if you put the distributor in and took a mag out, you need a different ignition switch and a wire running from the battery to the switch, if you want to "hot wire" it to see if it will start, run a jumper wire from you battery hot side, not the terminal that goes to the tractor frame, (dont know if you are 6v or 12v system) to the side of the coil that is opposite the terminal going to the distributor. this should get the coil working. you should have either 6 or 12v at the coil.
