I'm trying to remove the main pinion shaft bearing and cage. I removed the three bolts and snap ring. I can get the whole cage to move about 3/16" after that it won't move any farther. I really don't want to pry between the flange and the bearing housing because there is a chance of breaking off any part of the flange that the three bolts go through. So how's it done?

Have you disconnected the main drive shaft from the clutch shaft inside the clutch housing? You must do that be fore you can remove the pinion shaft. Also you must remove the transmission input gear, shaft and bearings by removing the bearing cage that holds all that from the outside front of the transmission. Once you do all that, and remove the three bolts that hold the bearing cage to the center wall of the transmission, the whole top transmission shaft will come out without removing any snap rings. It's been a while since I did this, so I probably left out a few things. Also pay attention to the other post about the pilot bearing.

On a regular H, you remove the front shaft by pulling the front bearing retainer with the tapped holes in the retainer. Then you slide the pinion shaft & bearing forward and lift it out. The bearing is a slip fit in the bore. Be careful with the pilot bearing between the two shafts. If its bad, little pieces & parts will fall down in the transmission. ken

On an M, you take a long punch and come from the rearend underneath the differential. Tap on ONLY the outer race of the bearing, do not pry. You will see it come forward. When you can see about half of the race it should slide out. Then lift it out.

Tractor is a Super H. The two models must be different because there is no place to get a long punch from the rear end area. Was thinking about heating the inner race that slide's over the pinion shaft a little. Any thoughts about using a little heat on the race?
