My SA runs great (now that I figured out my coil problem), except it seems to not like being even the least bit cooled down (ten minute break after running for 20 or 30 minutes under load). When I engage the starter it usually(when cool) hesitates almost as if it has no intention of starting and then it will turn over and usually run the first or second time. Howver, every once in awhile it takes three or four tries before it runs and that is when I start thinking about my poor 6V battery running out and the long haul back to the shop with battery in hand for a recharge. My neighbor was saying he thought it could be a compression issue?? I kind of nodded my head and thought to myself "I think I will post a message on the YT board"... So here it is any help is always appreciated.

If I'm reading this right it sounds like a timing problem. Sounds like you have it advanced jus a little to much and when its set that way when warm they are hard to turn over. Doing that was an old trick to get just a little more out of a V8 but the same problem is caused by doing that. You hit the starter and it will turn just a little slow way down then go on past TDC till it hit again and it slows again. Back you timing off just a tad and see if that helps

Switch Off. Take the distributor cap off, turn the engine over in its normal direction with the starter (or fan blade) and note which way the distributor rotor turns. Then rotate the distributor in the same direction that the rotor turned to retard timing.

Time engine (paraphrasing IH):
1. Determine which way the rotor normally turns (above).
2. Switch Off. Loosen distributor clamp bolts. Remove #1 sparkplug (nearest radiator). Place thumb over SP hole & turn engine until pressure is felt. Use a flashlight to see top of piston & turn engine slightly (w/fan blade) for piston at highest point of movement (or DC on timing mark).
3. Remove center wire on dist cap & wedge it under a dist cap clip so it's end is positioned 1/16 to 1/8" from the dist points/coil terminal. 3. Turn on Ign switch and check Ammeter for Discharge indication. If no Disc, turn dist in same direction as rotor normally turns just until Ammeter does show a discharge. From a Discharge showing, advance timing by slowly turning Dist back in the opposite direction to normal rotor rotation and stop when a spark occurs at the wire you wedged in the clip. 4. Turn off switch, replace wire, sparkplug, and tighten distributor clamp.

With out looking at it I could not tell you. Haven't ever worked on a SA but it can't be all that hard to figure out. If you turn it the wrong way it will be harder to start if you turn it the rihgt way easier

I would install 00 battery cables and clean all connections until nice and shiny and that includes where you are grounding the battery. Hal

It also helps to engage the starter , THEN when the engine is turning, pull the ignition switch. That way you get ALL the initial voltage to the starter. Check your cables. If they are 'auto size' (diameter) replace with 0 or 00. Gordo

An engine with timing advanced too far will stall the starter as the ignition fires before TDC. Could this be your problem? I'd re-check the ignition timing if it were mine.
