I have an MD that sat for most of the winter. I fired it up, started and ran on gas fine, hit the levers to switch it over and nothing. I checked, it's full of diesel, no water in the filters, pushing diesel out of the bleeder screws on the injectors, valves are definitely closing (won't crank past TDC with the starter when closed). Anything else to check? The linkages need adjusted, the lower lever won't pop the mechanism over center all the time, so maybe need to do that first... Thanks for any tips.

Sounds like the "butterfly valve" in the intake make not be working right.

We used to have the same problem with our MD after sitting all winter. As I recall, ours was usually caused by one of two problems--- either the linkage that does the actual switching was stuck, or there was some sort of arm inside the injector pump that was sticking.

With the first problem, the throttle and switching levers all felt like they were working fine, but spraying a little bit of penetrating oil around that round piece where the switchover rods finally end on the left side of the motor and then working them back and forth a bit usually solved the problem. It's been a long time, but it seems there was linkage on top of the motor that needed a squirt, too.

The 2nd problem occurred only twice, and that was after the MD sat for a couple of years, and fixing it involved taking the pump apart, but not too deeply as I recall.

Have you bled the system?

Yep, getting fuel squirting at the injector bleed screws...Next I was going to probably hook up to a tractor, switch to diesel and pull it a ways, it only turns over a couple times after switching from gas, maybe if it spins over longer on diesel it will start...

Chadd,

We're got a HUGE problem with this one and I just don't think it can be fixed.

So..... ..... ..

If I told you that tractor/F-10 really needs to be up here at my house? :>)

I was afraid of that...I'll just go find the scrap iron dealer's number...

Just kidding, don't anybody think I would even CONSIDER that...

I do know of a nice F10 sitting in a fence row that I could get for $200 or so...I also know where there's a grapple that needs a cylinder...

Can't help but notice that we've completely dropped the MD from the conversation. :>)

Can you blame me? ;-) Diversion tactics...

Dad bought the MD after the farm sale in the 80's, I remember when it showed up, only loader tractor we had for many years...until he bought another M with F10 several years later...

You betcha,

You keep that thing. They are just grand old tractors, I've always thought and I envy you.

Yep, grew up on it so I didn't realize how nice it was until started dealing with other tractors. Diesel for economy, power steering, live hydraulics, plenty of rear weight and an F10...great combination.
