Ok, I am getting closer to splitting my 1950 H, I should have some stands made this week I hope.
Here is my question's, exactly how many bolts need to be removed? I have the belly pump out and think I am ready to loosen bolts.
When the tractor is split and the front is on the tire and rear stand support, when I go to pull the engine will the front tip forward from the weight of the bolster? I am sure I will think of more as I get into it.

neblinc, Be very careful if this is your first split. I have yet to split one, but have had the rear tires off and it was rather nervewrecking. Redunancy is a good idea. When I pulled my right rear tire, I used a big cherry picker (4 ton capacty), and a log chain around the axle. Also had a stand made from 4X4 (4X4's stand directly in top of each other), and a homemade (more then adequate by itself I'm sure) steel jackstand. Be sure to keep your escape route in the event of failure in mind. Yes I'm paranoid, but one wrong move could mean death. Make sure you have adequate room to run if something goes wrong. Also, I would try to have someone else there for the splitting, just in case something does happen. I dont mean to sound crazy, but I dont want this post to be your last!! Let us know how it goes!! Get some pics if you can. I'd like to see the stands.

There are two "hidden" bolts. One is inside the bell housing; you have to remove the starter. Another is on the other side under the gas tank; this one can be removed from outside.

I'm not sure why you're splitting the tractor to pull the engine. You really should remove the front bolster, then the side rails, then the engine.

I agree with Nat that taking the front bolster off first then the rails then the engine last. IF you do remove the front bolster, be careful removing the the bolts that hold it to the frame rail. I have found on several tractors these bolts like to break. Then you have an extra aggravation. Also, when I rebuilt my H engine, I just used big, stout blocks of wood to support the bell houseing. That was a lot easier than making stands to bolt on the side. It was plenty sturdy for me but make sure you do what is comfortable for you.

Finally, your post read like you removed the belly pump in order to get the engine out. You wouldn't have needed to do that unless it needed to be replaced anyways.

Bottom line is be safe and have fun. You can do this by yourself as I did, but it would have been quicker and easier and safer with someone to help.

Yeah, this is all about fun!! pretty much taking everything apart to clean up, fix leaks and repaint.

Been waiting a year to get my shop done and now I am having fun in it ; )

Tell me more Nat

So I am going about this the wrong way? I want to pull the engine and take it in to have it checked over for dipping and check for cracks etc.

How heavy is the front bolster? sure looks like a heavy chunk of iron to me.

So I really just need to put my stands right behind the "split" of the tractor and start taking pieces off starting from the front? The engine will just hang there once the bolsters & side rails are removed?

Pretty much everything attached to the engine has been removed.

With all the rain we have had in SE Nebraska I have been able to get lots of "shop" time in on my project tractors.

These guys are right. The safest and most effective way to remove the engine is to remove the front bolster and frame rails, then the engine. I used an engine hoist attached to the bolster to lift the front of the tractor high enough to get the front wheels off of the ground. Then I blocked up under the bell housing and lowered the front down on top of the blocks, while keeping the front tires off of the ground. Then I took the frame rails off and moved the bolster with the engine hoist and set the bolster on the ground in one piece. Then I used the engine hoist to remove the engine. It only took a few hours to do it this way.

if you are pulling the engine, definately remove the bolster and rails, a lot easier to work on. if you have an engine hoist, its pretty easy. the bolster is heavy, couple 2-300 lbs. easier to drop the front end off first if you have a narrow front end. 4 bolts hold the tricle to the bolster, one bolt has an extended top, to limit steering travel. mark the hole it comes out of. raise the front tires off the ground a wee bit to get it out. then remove the bolster, use the engine hoist to hold the bolster up, remove the rail bolts, loosen the motor mount bolts and then loosen rail bolts to to the rear, pry the rail ends from the bolster. should walk right out.
