Mike, IFFFFF youre gonna make it 6 volt now regardless, the old genny may work or can be made to work at 6 volts regardless if its really a 6 or a 12 PROVIDED you use a proper 6 volt Voltage Regulator. A genny dont necessarily know what its voltage is supposed to be, it increases as its turned faster and/or more amps are pumped through its field windings which is the Voltage Regulators job/control. A 6 can still charge at 12 if a 12 volt VR is used (although not all that great and its NOT engineering correct) and its also possible for a 12 to charge at 6 if the old genny happens to be a 12 and youre gonna convert over to 6 n use a correct 6 volt VR. Id get a known good 6 volt VR or use yours if its really????? a 6 volt,,,,,polarize the genny,,,,, see what happens. If it its a Magneto Ignition you have no coil or ballast problems to worry with, while if its a battery powered coil ignition then the coil voltage n ballast has to be addressed. A working or non working genny wouldnt be the cause of it not running if its a magneto ignition as far as spark n ignition are concerned, but could be obviously if its a batery start n she wont crank over DUH Let us know Ol John T and all in Indiana
