Well today was one heck of a day.

At the farm today one of the guys was drving the 140 and came around the corner and ran smack into the side of a pickup. No one was hurt but the side of the truck sure is damaged at the door.

You could turn the steering wheel on the tractor but there was no reaction to the wheels although the steering shaft did turn. Come to find out about eight years ago my uncle broke something (worm gear?) but they just kept on useing the tractor.

So now the grill is all bent, tie rod bent, and one light bent backwards. I didnt get into trying to fix anything but was wondering if yall think its the worm gear thats broke? What else might it be? Guess I need to take that big nut off the end and see what all is messed up.

I dont think I like being the "tractor guy" anymore.

Then went home and worked on the rideing lawn mower cause my son had ran over an old tree stump and bent the deck. Course he wasnt any help cause he was out chaseing girls. I wish I was 18 again. lol

Randy: Consider yourself lucky, I seen numerous collisions of this type that snapped front off the engine block. One of my neighbors was towing his SA, chain around right side of front axle, chain came loose and the driver of the tow tractor wasn't paying attention. When the chain came tight with a snap, it broke the block. I've seen both a SA and a 200 with broken blocks from running front wheels into solid objects.

Hugh,

What happaned was that all of a sudden the steering on the 140 just quit steering. The guy was turning the steering wheel but the wheels didnt turn.

I guess it happaned so fast he didnt react fast enough and hit the truck. It wasnt the guys driving the 140 fault, just one of those things that happen. Course it didnt help that the brakes on one side dont work and the other side is wore out amd there was so much dirt in the clutch cover that the brake wouldnt even go back up after you pressed it.

The head Mexican at the farm said that it had actually happaned three other times and they had had it "fixed". I dont know what was "fixed" but someone didnt fix it right.

I took it to my tractor guy and we got the grill off and saw the radiator was leaking. I ordered a new radiator from YT, cost $399.00. Since its busy season Ill let the tractor guy work on it and just keep a check on what he does. Im better at supervising anyway. lol I think the tie rod can be straightened and if not Ill just get a new one. Its a work tractor so it doenst have to be as pretty as my Super A but I dont want it looking like junk either.

Thank goodness no one was standing there or they could have been squashed. Plus the guy driving the 140 could have been killed if the tractor had of flipped. Looking back at it now I know it could have been lots worse than a few thousand dollars of damage.

Hello, I have a 100 and the same thing happened (not hitting a truck) two different times and when I took it apart the second time to replace the key I cut another slot 180 degrees from the stock one and put in another key. it took a lot of time with a file but the two keys have not broke. Mike

woodruff key broke or one of the gears. does the nut on the vertical shaft turn with the steering wheel? if not it is probably one of the gears.

I didnt check it out to much. The steering wheel spins like it isnt connected to anything. One jerk of the wheel and it would spin and spin without resistance. I didnt look to see if the nut spun, Ill do that tomorrow. I was kind of upset at the whole thing at the time.

It could have been lots worse so I guess Im thankful for that. Its just that if the problem would have been fixed to begin with then stuff like this wouldnt happen.
