230 Fast Hitch problem

I've broken the Lateral Swing Shaft again on our 230 for about the 4th time in the tractor's 50-year life. Can anyone tell me what circumstance causes this? I suspect that it may result from having the swing limit pin engaged while using an implement that ought to be able to swing a bit, but lacking any manual about details of Fast Hitch use, I just don't know for sure. Are there any rules of thumb for when to engage the swing limit pin or not? Which type of implement requires it and which don't, etc? Also, any suggestions on where to try for replacement of the broken Lateral Swing Shaft?

I had that happen on dad's 350 once, when I was attenager and I know what xcaused it that time. I would come to the end of the field plowint, hit the up lever, spin the steering wheel and hit the inside brake. Wouldn't take the constant swinging of the plow. Changed my tactics after that.

Tom: The pin locking lateral movment of the hitch should be removed at all times while doing tillage or operating a rear hitch planter. Tillage includes all plows, disks and cultivators.

The 560 has the same device on it's fast hitch, I had a 560 for years. If you leave the lateral swing pin in using in ground tillage tools, you can't steer, you can't even make steering corrections. If you leaving that pin in during tillage, it's little wonder your breaking the device. If it were a 450 or 560, you'd have broke it a lot more than 4 times in 50 years.

Thanks to you all for the help on this. I'm just going to leave the locking pin out. There are several of us that operate this tractor and I need to make sure we're all on the same page on this issue.

Hugh, all of mine are so loose you don't have to take out nothing. Except when using yhe planter.

George: That is true of most of them. If you look through the archives, you'll find numerous ocasions where I described my 560 fast hitch as being similar to pulling the baler or forage harvester with a 4' chain. Blessed be the day that IH decided it wasn't practical to use that hitch as a drawbar. Particularly on the bigger tractors. 3 point would have been no better if farmers had used it for a drawbar. I cut my 560 fast hitch up for scrap, before tractor was 10 years old. I bought a new M type drawbar for it.

I think fast hitch was the cats meow for SC, 100, 200, 130, 230, 140 and 140, however the big boys beat the crap out of it. I know, even the hitches on the light tractors are getting loose by now.

Hugh, I agree 100% the small tractors work great with it. I took the fast hitch off my 400 and 350s so I could pull the hay balers. I do put it back on one 350 every once in a while to use the mower or grader blade. I was using the fast hitch planter on the 450, but a main bearing or something went out of it the other day. It is now on that long list of stuff that needs fixing.

to research your problem, you could use a softer bolt in place of the pin, when the bolt breaks, that"s a situation that causes your problems. not too soft of a bolt though, as it will stretch and cause other wear you do not want.

Thanks.. I'll give Brad a call. Any speculation on what I might be doing to cause this thing to shear at the point where the steel shaft is welded to the plate, if that makes any sense.

No I do not, I have used these as long as I have been farming, and have never broke one. Let me know if you find the problem. I really can't see why they would need to swing, they swing to much as it is. On dads 230 we plow and use a mowing machine on it and have since 1978 and no problem with it. I have 3 others larger than the 230 and no problems with those either. I have fast hitch plows,disc,mowers,bale movers,subsoiler,planters,tobacco setter,hay rake and a few other things as well and use them all with no problems. On some of things you are suppose to remove some pins, but I usually don't. I do remove some for the planters so the can float properly. When plowing I leave them in.

It's got me stumped. Maybe there's something wrong with the hitch geometry. This part is a big ol' hunk of steel that breaks and it seems it would take exceptional force to break it. We go for long periods (years) using plows, shredder/mowers, disks and cultivators on this tractor with no problems and all of a sudden, the thing breaks.

I'll keep diggin and let you know what I find out. Thanks for all your help.
