I have inherited my grandfather’s tractors an F14 and F20. Both of these tractors have been sitting out side for the past 25-30 plus years. I have considered trying to bring these tractors back to running condition and would like to look at using a more modern engine. I would like to be able to do occasional work in the field or put a mower on them. So I see no need to increase in hp. A small 3 cylinder diesel would be perfect. Does any one have experience doing this? Would it be possible to use the existing clutch? Thanks for you help.

Are you in Texas? What part? I might be able to help with getting the original engines running.

Yes, I am in Texas about 50 miles north of Dallas. I am not sure the original engines are worth the work. My goal is to have a couple of small tractors with the least amount of financial input. I would also like to make them as light and reliable as possible. This part of why I am looking for a more modern engine.

You would probably have more in modifying everything else than to just rebuild what you have. If you want modern, buy modern.

I restored my Grandfather's 1936 F-20. It had been sitting out in the weather for at least 20 years, probably closer to 30+. The engine block was broke badly, so it needed a new block. I was able to get the pistons out, but the sleeves were junk. Beyond that, and a head rebuild, it was an easy fix. The tractor was near the gulf coast, so lots of rust. If your block is not broken, then it may be easier, and cheaper, to fix the original engine than try to fit in a newer one. Modern car and truck engines tend to want to run at a higher RPM than the older ones, so your gearing will be wrong. I suggest you pull the head off and see how bad it actually is. The bad stuff may be isolated to just one cylinder. Or, the whole engine will be junk. It is best to know before buying parts. The tractors will be worth more with their original engines intact.

Just buy a newer tractor if thats what you are looking for and sell the the F14 & F20 to someone that needs parts or can restore them to orginal working order. Never say it is too far gone....I know a guy that found a tractor barried under 6ft of soil for over 30 years and it was in very bad shape, but he has fixed up to show condition now.

Unless you are a good fabricator or have a friend that is you'll spend as much money trying to make a deisel fit in than, just fixing it up.
