I'm putting the head back on my Jeep CJ2A ('47) flat-head motor. Is any compound (dope) such as gaket- sealer, PeraTex necessary ? The gasket is a FelPro metallic-type with no instructions. listed on shipping carboard. If so, both sides? Block side? Head side? Or not at all? Thanks. BustedKnuckles

Don't mess with peratex or gasket shelac. It has a tendancy to make cork/paper gasket brittle and hard to remove. I realize that your head gasket is not of either of these types but it is still good to know.

A freind of mine is a mechanic and he turned me on to two good ideas that have worked very well. The first is hair spray for any rubber hoses. They slip on easy and after the hair spray drys with the clamps tight it never leaks. The second is 3M contact cement, the spray can kind. I spray it on all gaskets. It seal them and also makes it very easy to removed the used gasket with very little scraping. Both work like a champ.

I use grease on my old 1930s IHC tractors. If you have to take it off in the near future, it is not a difficult task.

If it is metal spray it with aluminum paint or coat it with Copper Kote on both sides and install. It will work fine. Dave
