I have an opportunity to buy a Cub with a fresh engine for $1000. I've been an 8N Ford, Ferguson TO-20 and MF-135 man forever, and know nothing about Cubs except they are cute. How hard is it to install a belly mower on this tractor, and how is the price? Thank you to all who reply

It sounds like a good deal depending on the overall consition. I run a 1964 cub every week with a Woods 59 and as long as you cut the grass each week it mows fine. If you let it grow about three week you have to lift the deck a tad. Also if you hear a growling or whine in first and reverse thats nothing because they all do it.

I picked up a used IH C3 mower in decent shape for my cub three seasons ago on E-Bay for about $400. The mower is 59" and similar to the woods belly mower for the cub. It is quite easy to install to the tractor. I found that the PTO pulley that came with the mower was a bit too big for the hp that the cub produces. I'm not sure if it was the stock pulley but was about 8" in diameter. I replaced with one that is about 5" in diameter. It still turns the mower blades fast enough to mow grass and now I can mow my yard in second gear.

Could you hit us up again w/info on cubs. I did a right click; google search and "tons" of links and I"m just so busy waiting for the government program for us Norwegian hyphenated Americans to come through, so, if you could provide a link, it would be wonderful. Check the final drives, the front bolster (bottom part of the radiator) and the engine block for cracks. Since you say the engine is rebuilt, it should be OK. A new 60 inch Woods mower for the Cub will run you $2000 or so. You can probably find a used one for less than $1000. IH also made a 42 inch mower for the Cub which is more appropriate for it's power. With the 5 ft, you can only mow grass that is not very high and much of the time you will be in 1st gear if the grass is even moderately high.
