Refresh memory of early live Hyd sys

Hello ALL: Way back in 1953 we got a then brand new Super MD and it had the factory live hyd pump near the right front of the engine. There was a hyd control unit under the fuel tank... Back then many of the implements were built and used with one-way belly pumps. We got a near new 4 row cultivator and here is where my memory fades regarding the hyd system. I could swear that it was a lift only cultivator. A one way lift cylinder? Same with a few other implements since IHC factory two-way hyd was just starting back then. We had an extra factory built, round hyd fluid tank mounted unto the side and above that control box under the fuel tank. I believe that was because the one-way lift cylinder needed more fluid then what was normally stored in the control box... Ok, how far off is my memory that we operated some one-way lift cylinders as well as some two-way cylinders with the then new 1953 Super MD.? Dad almost never used anything that wasn't built by IHC on his new tractors. Go easy on my memory because thats 54 years ago... Is my memory right? agpilot

Thanks a lot CNKS and D Slater. That helps restore faded memory cells. I felt we had the best hydraulic system because we operated both one-way and two-way cylinders. And to think I drove that tractor more then anyone else and couldn't remember the details. But it was trouble free so maybe that's why I didn't remember details clearly. Thanks again guys..... agpilot

The reservoir tank under the fuel tank had valving inside it much like the belley pump reservoirs with pressure ports to operate one way cylinders. To operate it a rod was hooked to a lever and shaft going in the side of reservoir. You pulled back for pressure and pushed forward to lower implement. If tractor was also equiped with a IH remote control valve to operate two way hydraulics it was locked in closed position to pressure the valving inside reservoir. To pressure the two way valve the reservoir lever was locked back and a rod was used to operate the two way valve.

Depends on how it was equipped. The standard system was one way. There was a factory remote valve that could be ordered with the tractor or added later, which gave 2-way hydraulics. It was available for the belly pump non-live system too. Works like a modern spool valve.
