I decided it was time to have the F-14 I restored a few years ago start earning its keep. I’m going to use it for light duty chores but try to still keep it looking good for the annual parade. I spent yesterday towing around a 10’ drop lime spreader. Even after driving it for a couple hours the temp gauge never got up anywhere near the normal range. I don’t have much experience with these thermosyphon systems. Top of the radiator was good and warm but the bottom was pretty cool. Gauge sending unit is in the lower elbow from the radiator and that was still cool as well. Tractor ran well and no sign of overheating or anything. No shutters on the radiator and it was about 50 degrees and misty rain at the time. Radiator was full of antifreeze and you could still touch the casting between the head and radiator but wouldn’t want to hold onto it for more than a few seconds. Does this sound normal? Do I have the wrong gauge? Am I just not working it hard enough even after 2 hours of running? Opinions appreciated.
Tim

My experience matches yours. Only time I've ever gotten the needle off the peg is while hauling a 2-14 rollover plow that was WAY too much for the tractor. Even had to crack the shutters a notch";^)

Hi Tim. All's well and normal. We got an F-12 on steel. If it's not under a load it won't heat up, you can drive that thing dang near all day and won't get real warm. The only time it gets warm is when I plow all day at plow boys.

That is the simplicity of T-siphon it works as needed. The only problem is that as technology changed to increas engine temperatures for good efficiency, the system worked too well and didn't work well with a thermostat. So waterpumps and controlled flow were installed. Yours is fine. JimN
