Oil Pressure on 140 Farmall

Just got a 140 Farmall Saturday with plow and cultivators. Came in right off the farm all dirt and oil in place so clearly plain to see what needs to be done. Question is that it has a 75 pound oil pressure guage on it and sure doesn't register very high. I thought those had a 45 pd. or variable guage on them. I think it is a 68 model and I think those little guys will run on about 15 or 20 pounds but don't want to tear it up. No smoke and runs great and most things work. Gotta try to keep up with Allan on these red ones you know . Anyone got some ideas here? Also, will a mower deck from a larger cub cadet mount on a 140? Thanks

The others are right I have ran a 49 C since 1975 and it has never held over 15 lbs hot. A smart man I knew told me if one held what some gauges claimed 70 or 80 lbs it would blow things apart. He also claimed as long as you had 4 to 7 lbs it was perfectly fine. He worked for IH dealor in Cynthiana Ky for 48 years. Folks around there said he was the best letter series man in the country. By the time I knew him he was to old to do much, but he could sure tell about Farmalls from front to back.

If you have 15-20 psi oil pressure when it's hot, you will wear out before it does. I had a super A that was barely above the red at full throttle when it was hot. Used it at least weekly with a Woods mower for 9 years. I've never done this, but I hear one thing to check is the cover on the oil pump (You'd have to remove the oil pan) to make sure it is not warped and letting oil leak. Also, are you sure the gage is good???

I have an early 60s model 140. When cold, the pressure gauge moves up about 2/3 of the way then drops to barely registering when hot. I checked a few times by removing the valve cover to see if upper engine parts were lubed. Everything seemed ok. I have used this tractor since 1978 with no engine issues and it is still going strong. I do have to add a quart once in a while. Hope this helps.

I would suggest giving a "hollar" in a northerly direction and get Hugh MacKay"s attention up in Canada. Knowledgable IH 140/130 & other model owner and reportedly wears shorts, but still no picture to prove it.

Al: Wake me up, don't I deserve to have a mid day snooze.

Hass has it all, these little tractors will run for years with very little oil presure. My SA and 140 run about 40-50# even when warm. My 130 warm has been running on 15# for many years, and on many ocasions it's been worked hard 12 to 16 hours per day. Never gets and worse or never gets any better.

Now back to my sleep, I was out bulldozing all day, yes changing the shape of the earth. You know what I like about bulldozing over trucking. The most annoying thing in front of you is a pile of soil.

Diana: Ah, the shorts, I'll probably not live that down for awhile. It's in the archives, probably about July 2-3 2005. This happened during one of my invasions of the USA. Marg. and I were in upstate NY, stopped for a visit with Bob and Glenda Melville. Photos were the order of the day, and I had shorts on and an Oliver hat. Later that evening Bob posted a photo of Marg. and I on YT. Well, these guy took issue with my hat, made fun of my legs and wondered how such an ugly guy as myself, found such a lovely wife. I got back at everyone of them, all in good fun of course.

You could install a pressure gauge that's graduated in increments. Some are graduated in 10 lb increments. Hal

I have 2 140's ('68 & '71) and both have 75 psig gauges. Both start up at about 70, then run over 40 when warmed up. I think the marks are in 15 psig increments, with 0 and 75 the only numbers shown.

Thanks Folks, I will try one other guage on it but I think it is just running on low oil pressure. I will change the oil soon and put in 30 weight and see what it does. Power washed it up tonight and doesn,t look too bad. The rear light even came on after a little wiggle of the wires. Got some free shanks and blade brackets for it tonight so I think I will like the little guy. It completes the 40 series for me as I now have the 140,240, and 340 ,all of them Farmalls. Thanks again. A complete "40 series", I gots work ta do. I did have two 240 U"s and a rowcrop 340. They got sold when I moved nine miles north w/no storage. Now I have a Farmall 340 w/factory wide-front. In my opinion, the best lookin" tractor series ever! It must have somethin" ta do with the toy 560 Farmall tractor I was given as a little Norwegian.
