I noticed a post a while back that mentioned there was a tool that could be used to renew the gas tank. I am working on a super H. The gas cap is almost impossible to tighten. any suggestions? The lip is deformed a little.

Thanks, Gene

Lots of us could make good use of that tool. Maybe someone should think about reproducing it?

If you can figure out the size and shape of the top and bottom of the filler opening, dies could be turned out on a lathe to reproduce this tool. The bottom piece has to have two pieces cut off the outside after turning to be able to fit it through the filler opening. Most sleeve puller adaptor plates are shaped like this. There is a light chain connecting the two pieces so it can be retrieved if dropped in the tank.

The two dies just have to be pulled together to reform the filler lip between them. Turn the bottom piece once to cover the areas that are missed by the cut off pieces on the bottom plate and repeat the process.

The tools were sent to IH dealers when the gas cap replacement program was started. If you can find an dealer today that was in business then, they can probably help you. Unfortunately so many dealers left the business in the '80s and '90s that you may have a hard time locating one. It was most likely made by Owatonna Tool Company, Owatonna Minnesota.

Wonder how the thing works? I know of a couple of dealers who have been in business through that time.

Thanks, Gene

There is a circular piece that is shaped to fit the underside of the fill opening you position inside the lip of the tank opening. It has a threaded rod attached that extends through the filler opening. Another circular piece that is machined to fit the top side of the filler opening is then mounted on this rod and drawn together with a nut. By repositioning a couple of times you can reform the entire top lip. The cap stops that are on the inside of the filler opening had to be straightened before using this tool.

This was part of the inspection to make sure that the filler cap gasket had a good surface to seal against.
