Farmall 340 Plowing Question

Is a #311 plow with 3-14" bottoms too much plow for a Farmall 340 to handle? We have our fair share of red clay around here. The plow would be used only at plow days and the like.I could remove one of the bottoms and make it into a #211, but then I`d have 2-14" bottoms and the tractor would play with that.I also would have to fabricate a frame rail to go down to 2 bottoms. What do you guys think? All opinions are welcome!

The thing to do is hook your plow up and see what happens. If you find that it will pull it use it, if not, I have a 211 2x14 I would trade for that 311.

I want to thank everyone for their good comments and suggestions. I had an inkling that more people would say that a 3 bottom probably won`t work, but I thought I`d throw the bone out there. We have red clay here,so judging from the majority of the comments, it probably won`t go so well. Georgeky,I would trade with you in an instant if you were a little closer. What part of Kentucky do you live? I live near Green Bay,WI, so distance is a slight problem.I`m thinking of going to Cubarama in MO this Sep.,so maybe if you`re in W. Kentucky we could work something out??

I am 40 miles east of Lexington. A long way from western Ky. You never know about me I may take a trip to Missouri, since gas is so cheap. I like to nose around and see what is going on in other parts of the country.

I run a 2x16 in northern MN with lots of clay. My 340 barely notices when I"m cutting 4 inches. I would think a 3x14 might work your tractor but it"ll pull.

A turning plow was designed to plow deeper than 4 inches. If that is as deep as you plow you might as well use the disk. Run it down to 8 or 10 and see how it works. I have a 311 3x 14 fasthitch plow and a no.531 3x14 3ph plow and I can tell you from past experiance it will not pull either in the ground 8 or 10 inches deep. I know someone is going to say a 14 inch was designed to plow 7 inches deep and the 16 8 inches deep, but they will plow well at deeper depths.

Around here ya plow as deep as ya can and ya try to turn up some yellow every year , so that could be 6-12 inches . Now if you are putting the plow into the beam then that is just a bit deep.

Vet, I saw a 2520 JD pulling 5x16s down on the Little Blue river in southern Nebraska and doing a pretty good job. At the time I had a 2520 here at home and it would barley pull 3 here. Sales lit for an M say's it is a 3 to 4 plow tractor and they have a hard time with three here. I have spun my 584 with fluid and 175 lb weight on each wheel with 3x14s and it will pull a hell of a lot more than a 340.

a 340 with 3-14s is what my grandpa used as his main plowing tractor on the farm for years. I have used the tractor a few times for plowing just for fun. The tractor seemed more than capable to pull the plow. I'm not quite sure on what the type of soil is around here.

Stop you are asking a 135cu in engine to pull what an M with 248 cu in did. Light soil plowing not over 4in would work

And your point is ??? she was sold as a 2-3 plow tractor and even around here they were pullen 3 bottoms and she will run all day long in second pullen three fourteens in second if it is weighted wright. i have seen 706's pullen 5x16's around here not that i would want to as 4x16's is enough in first high in corn ground and 4th low in sod. as this allows the gov. to cut back and just stroll along .Way back iuse to pull 4x14 semi mounts with my 450 diesel with a harrow on it as i learned that 4 semi mounts pull easier then three mounted .

Around here it is to much plow for a 340. Here three will work a 400 hard.

This depends on your soil type , but on the avg. No as it was a 3 plow tractor and 3x14's is what it was made for in most soils.

It won't pull 3x14s nowhere around here, I have tried it several times. Even our real good soil is to tough for it. I saw a picture the other day (was sales literature) of a 404 pulling 3 as well. It won't do it here either. Or anywhere else I don't think.
