is there a way to time the spark comming out of the mag to the cap? i know that you could make a mark on the gear and just keep jumpimg a kaug at a time and eventually you will get it right? But there must be a way to get it right on without trial and error. I took the mag apart for the first time to see how it works and i like to know why it does what it does. and in doing so i untimed the mag with the cap. To make matters worse i forgot to mark where the rotor was pointing when it took it off the tractor. but I know how to retime an engine. by the way this is a h4 mag off a MD.

You guys are awesome! I am sooo glad I found this site! Ya I was playing with the little gears! It is raining like cats and dogs out side right now, but the corn was getting a little dry as we needed the rain. this is shaping up to be a bumper season so far. i know it is really early but the crops are off to a real early start i seen some corn that was over a foot and ahalf tall and i live in minnesota! Cant wait to sink my teeth into a fresh hot peice of my neighbors sweet corn! also my apple trees look really really full this year! momma's gonna be maken that fresh hot apple pie! im drooling just thinking about it! only thing better than hot apple pie with new york vinnela ice cream would be.... having hot apple pie with ice cream while riding on your farmall that you just got going for the first time!!! I am sure thankful that we live in the country where i can have all the tractors and apple pie I can handle!

I can smell that applle pie by just thinking about it. My late mother-in law used an iron skillet that was very deep to make deep apple pie.
Then we put milk on it. Hal

just turn the input shaft on the mag till it comes to hard spot then check where the rotor is and how far from the tower of the cap it misses linning up.

Gene is right on. Bob, mor often than not replacement (ie tisco) gears do not have timing marks.

If yours do not have timing marks, Genes way is the only way...trust me I've been there:')

What are you guys doing to destroy gears, so you need to replace them with generic parts?

I can't recall EVER having to replace a rotor drive gear in an H4 mag!

I have never had to replace a gear, but I have fixed lots of Mags that had replaced gears in them already.

I take part of that back, I did replace a larger rotor gear once because the slot the rotor slips into was wallowed out bad enough that the tractor ran bad. How it got in that bad of shape I have no idea.

I made the same mistake, it was my first time messing with a magneto. It took about ten minutes to get it right. It wasn't that difficult.
