Worked on taking more stuff apart on the engine, got the all the main caps & seals removed except for the middle one, I can't seem to get it to come up. Any tricks for that.

Everything still seems frozen, can't budge anything yet. Can the cam gear come off if the crank won't move? Looks like since the gears are beveled that it won't come straight out.

Also there is some kind of gouge in the rear crank where the felt seals go, looks odd to me.

Pics are on the bottom of my web page.

Randy

What a great slideshow. Question? Why didn't you just buy a $500.00 tractor? Looking forward to more pics. David.

Ga Dave, Well I wanted something cheap that I could tear into and gain some experience in engine work. And also wanted to save it from getting parted out or sent to the scrap man.

Easy question first: The gouge is a spiral cut that helps keep oil in. No, the cam gear and crank gear kind of "lock" together when neither shaft can turn. To remove the cam the lifters have to be out of the way also. The oil pump can stay but on a rusty engine I would go ahead and remove it, gotta get it replaced anyhow.

Keep in mind that replacement gears can be had at a reasonable price on e-bay.

lookin at your crankcase photos, i'm thinking after you get the main caps off, you may be able to kind of lift and roll the crank a little to expose the #2 and 3 rod caps, block the crank up with some wood andpull the caps, should be able to lift the crank out then. cant remember but i think you need to drop the oil pump to get the cam out. you may be able to knock or press the pistons out the bottom, pretty rusty to come out the top. dont bend the rods, they are pricey. coming along real good tho. did you find any mice or wasps in her????

Such involved restoration projects fascinate me. They make my projects look pretty simple.

What are your plans for this tractor? Do you know the tractor's history? Are you planning on repainting it as you put it back together? I saw your other H. Do you have any other tractors? Is this the most involved tractor project you've taken on yet?

Questions...questions!

Thanks for keeping us posted.

Well Glenn, this is my first time on tearing one down this far. The most involved project I did prior to this was replacing leaking seals in the PTO & belly pump on my 49 H.

This tractor was bought at auction and the guy that had it looked like he had his own salvage yard. He had it sitting in his lot for at least 10 years according to his family who was having the auction. That's about all I know about it.

Yes I plan on getting into painting once I save up for a nicer compressor and paint gun, I figure I have enough to do on cleaning up both these tractors to last me a while.

Not really sure what I will do with them once I get em fixed up, Probably end up selling them at a loss so I can start over on another one ; )

This makes a total of 3 H's that I have, the 1949 H is the working tractor that the wife uses to haul off the horse manure, It's in pretty good shape.

This is all just a hobby to me, so I am in no big hurry, But I am starting to get addicted to the smell of PB Blaster ; )

Glenn, just so you know, Randy is probably going to sell the '43 to me once he's done with it. I figure by the time he's done, I'll be an Admiral, and will be able to afford to pay for the work!

hehehe

You have the cleanest shop I have ever seen! I couldn't get any work done in there, I'd move in a pool table and call it the rec room ;>)

Give me time, you have to remember this a new shop, I have a few years of catching up and accumulating junk, err I mean parts ; )

Plus the lights and the epoxy floor really makes it look clean.

To remove the main cap stick both main bolts into the cap and hold them pulled together as tight as ya can and with a hammer hit the bolts from side to side worken the cap back and forth while putting and up pull on them she will pop wright out . Getting a crank out of a stuck engine can be a fun but it can be done.

The "gouge" is factory... it is a spiral cut into the surface that the felt seal rides on. When the engine is running the spiral pulls oil back into the engine.

The middle cap has the thrust bearing in it, they fit pretty tight in there. Put a bolt that fits tight into the hole of the cap, but don't thread it into the block, and tap sideways and it should come loose. Brass hammer is a good tool for working on things like this - I have been going to buy one for about 10 years now... when I start the next restoration project I will purchase one!

I can get the bearing to move side to side about a 1/64 inch, so I think it is loose, just can't get it to pull off.

Thanks for the info on that gouge Onefarmer, other than that so far the crank and seals really don't show much scoring or wear.

Getting that main off with the thrust bearing can be a booger. I just put one of the bolts and lightly tap it inline with the cap(read sideways of the engine)and it will come off. May need to work it a bit in both directions. Don't get too wild and hurt the cap or the bolt.

Have you tried tapping that main bearing cap with a brass drift and a big hammer? Hal

Unfortunately no idea on what caused the gouge. My best guess is that that gouge came from part of the rear main or the cap the retains it. I sure hope you can get that old girl going because it looks like you have alot of work ahead of you there. Note on getting the 3rd main cap off if you didn't already try smacking it gently side to side with a rubber mallet. It is probiably rust welded to the mating surface of the block and it needs alittle helping along. Best of luck.

That gouge is a spiral groove to run the oil back into the engine as it runs. My 340 has it to.
