My 966 has the large dual 6 volt batteries. Been having low crank or no crank problems. Removed alternator and took it to elec shop. Tested out a zero charge. Owner rebuilt it while his wife cut my hair. Out of there in 35 minutes with 'new' alt. Installed and nice charge on alt gage. Then after a days planting. No crank, low batteries. Batterie fairly new and tested OK. Charged the batteries up. Tested with voltmeter at 6.65v. Installed and Fired the old girl up.
Put meter on each battery and it still read 6.6 volts. My question is where does the output from the alternator enter the system? and why does the battery that is second in line read 6 volts insted of 12? Does that alternator put out 12 volts or 6? Where do I check for alternator output? And yes, I am leaving the key switch on.

Batteries are hooked in series. I have owned the tractor over 4 years and it has always started within 1 second of hitting the start button. After the alt rebuild I did get real high amp reading, slowly tapering down to tiny reading, over an hour, just like you would expect to see. I have had some problems getting the fuel lever all the way over to the 'off' detent lately. Just goes to 'very low idle, sputter, quit', and won't go back to full off left, and I have left it there. Could leaving this lever in the 'somewhat on' position be causing a drain on the battery? I'll see if my voltmeter leads can reach the starter lug and ground cable. All the connections are extra clean and shiny, and TIGHT! If I don't see 14+ there then I'll move on to the resistor,

If the charging voltage is ok you need to check the specific gravity of the elecrolyte in each battery cell and compare them, they should be around 1.250 or better. If one is around 1.100 that battery probably needs to replaced. Hal

Take the batties off take them to a good servise center have them to check them for load test.

I've been there twice this summer.on the 966&1456 it turned out bad battery one on each.not at the same time.

The batties on the 1456 less than 4 mouth old.the batties will charge but not hold it.soon as you hit starter button it's gone.

Gordo,

Ya know, it could be that those batteries are just plain worn out.

Don't hollar at me! I'm trying to help. :>)

Had both batteries tested at implement dealer (IH) and Asvance Auto. Both gave them a thumbs up. Starter was just rebuilt. I broke the stud off the solenoid trying to tighten everything to the max a couple weeks ago. I guess I will just mount the portable Kubota 1000 watt generator/charger on her .

Replace the resistance unit. Porcelain thing with wire terminals on each end , found just above or below voltage regulator. Remove sheet metal panel beside park lock operating lever to gain access to voltage regulator. These tractors will not charge the batteries if the resistance unit is bad. Been there , done that. Could be voltage regulator also.

If your batteries are hooked in series:

+ starter

_

+

- grd You should have around 14.5 volts when you touch the top + and the bottom - that's grounded with a volt meter. Engine needs to be at 1/2 throttle.

You did not state whether the 2 six volt batteries are connected in series or parallel. Are the two battery positive terminals connected together (parallel and 6 volts) or is the positive terminal from one battery connected to the negative terminal on the 2nd battery ( series and 12 v)? If the batteries are in series, then 12 volts to the starter and if in parallel, you should read 6 volts across the starter. Now you can trace your alternator output and see where it goes and what the output is.

Gordo,

Check your voltage at the big starter lug, which is where the alternator ties in. With the tractor running, it should measure right at 14.65 volts.

Are the batteries hooked in series as they should be? Or, has someone mistakenly hooked the dudes in parallel?

Your guage still shows a good healthy charge?

Allan
