HI I am looking at a 424 diesel utility Probably stuck has not run since 1984 It has orchard fenders on it but do not look original. Was this a good tractor? It looks like it is an 8 speed. did this tractor have some form of TA? What is it worth if anything. Not sure it is stuck but would assume so Thanks

I have a 424 diesel, with a TA, which is basically an overdrive (I think about 30%) on any gear. Yes, 4 speed with Hi Lo.
Good tractors if they have been looked after. Quite strong for their size.
God Bless,
Rex

Ya thats what I told him, that there was crud in the bottom of the tank, he just wouldnt let me and the other guy take it out of service for a little while to clean it. Nothing wrong with the 484 overall its really a good tractor, just this one never got the matenance it needed and deserved. Thats why I always chose the 424 over the others it had, and still is well takne care of.

They are fairly good little tractors, we have a 424 and 444 and both have given good service. The Vet is right about being expensive to work on, but most diesels are. Unlike J. J. Dad has a 484 that he bought new in 81 and it is a better tractor than either the 424 or 444, with better steering, hydraulics and brakes. If glow plugs don't work on the 424 or 444 it ain't going to start if it is 90 outside, or neither of ours do.

Well the 484 I used was not in the best of shape because of previous owners. I know one hydraulic remote didnt always work, and it didnt always want to start. Also our boss would always beat the crap out of that tractor, speeding over uneven ground, whipping tight turns, its amazing he didnt roll that thing over. Also it had issues with starving for fuel and the boss wouldn't take time to look into that, let alone fix it. Than again he was also dumb enough to put the snowblower on the 484 in the winter, and what a suprise, he could never get that tractor to start, I wonder why. That 424 is a good tractor and the best tractor of what they have right now if ya ask me.

Ours is a little hard to start below 35 degrees, but starts good above that. It has 5300 hours on it now and we have replaced the front seal and seat on it. It does make a big difference in who and how any of them are used and abused. The fuel problem is likely crap in the bottom of tank, I have had this trouble with all of mine that had that rear tank on them. Take the fuel lines loose at the tank and clean it out as best you can and it will do wonders. we had that trouble again two years ago with a 684 we bought at a sale and the cross over line was stopped completely up. Runs great now.

No that model did not have a T/A and is a 4 speed main with a high low so ya have 8 with no shift on the go . If is stuck then keep in mind that you are dealing with a Diesel and it may get deep into your pocket book fixen it. Here again the price of it is what ever ya think it is worthe because ya may only want to pay a few hundred bucks for and end up with it only to find that you will have 3-5 grand in pices and parts in it with no labor in it when done and only be worth 3-4 grand .

I have not used a 424 diesel, however I did drive a 424 gas for about 5 months when I worked at the county fairgrounds. It was an four speed transmission with a high and low shifter on the side for a total of eight forward speeds. As for as TAs and cost I couldn't tell ya much. But they are really a good tractor. It was better than the other two which were a IH 484 and Case equivelent of that because it always started nice and easy and always handled the manure spreaders and finishing mowers, whatever we threw at that tractor, it took it.
