Both of my 400s have had the rear housing repaired for a simuilar problem. One has a patch bolted on to the area where the break occurred. The other one had a weld gobbed on to it. I ground the weld off an applied JB Weld to it.

Housings and transmission gears are the same, but unless you change to the row crop ring and pinion the tractor will be faster. The axles and axle housings would need switched along with top cover and pedals, some linkage parts and so on. If you refer to rear drain on transmission something probably got under bull gear. If T/A housing and T/A is good on the W-400 the transmission main shaft with pinion gear can be removed from the rear after removing differential which you would have to do anyway for ring gear change. Just listed your options, this is not a recommendation on what is best to do.

An expert welder can repair whatever damage and than add a sealer over it. We repaired the bottom of a M diff. housing back in the early '60's and did not have the sealers that we have today. That tractor is still in use today. This is the best answer I can give without seeing the damage. Do not give up the repair option too soon! Armand

Most likely it was the a bearing on the PTO shaft and it got under the constant mesh gear and needed a way out . Not a W seires trans will not work ya need to find one from a 400 -450 or a S/MTA finding a used housing for a 400 - 450 would be easy . Don't know where your are at but just start looken at the salvage yards . Rebuilding one from the ground up is not that bad of a job as i have done several for the same thing. Or ya may find a whole rear that all ya have to do is bolt it up . As fo me i would prefer the rebuild then ya know what ya got.
