Note this picture is the bottom of the entire steering gearcase, steering shaft, hyd. assist, and steering wheel. By putting down pressure on the steering wheel I dislodged the "plug."

OK, never paid any attention to it, and I have had those pieces completely disassembled and painted. That would come out pretty easy when hit from the inside. If you have power steering, on the right side of that unit, when viewed from the rear when installed is a dome held on by 4 bolts, Inside is a piston. The inside of the dome on mine was pitted by long term water in the fluid. I had a sleeve installed. You might check that, it is not hard to take apart. Leaks are prevented mainly by an o ring, but mine also uses a gasket that will probably have to be replaced. Since you have it off, you took the hyd lines loose from that dome, provided it has power steering.

Any thoughts on fluid or amounts for that case? I did notice the dome and learned alot on how the power steering works.

The book says 10 gallons, which includes everything except the PTO, I think. When I get everything working I will check it again. Another quart or so probably won't hurt anything with that volume. My fast hitch cylinder was empty as was everything else after the teardown so I don't know if that was included in the 10 gallons. Since fast hitch and power steering were options, although most came that way from the factory, I am not sure of the actual amount. 10 gallons is a lot of fluid, and my guess would be that +/- a couple of quarts won't matter much.

CNKS-I think he`s just asking about the gearbox fluid, which is seperate from the hydraulic fluid to the power steering rack. The plug ButchWI is referring to is a frost plug at the bottom of the steering shaft.

Yes, you are correct -- it has a fill plug. In the operator's manual, it says "full strength IH torque amplifier transmission lubricant" or "worm gear lubricant" which I assume is 90W. What I don't know is what the TA trans lubricant is, it is not hytran, as it says you can add one quart of TA trans lubricant to 4 gallons of hytran in the transmission.
