Well here I am again asking for help.Have my H in shop replaceing a bearing on my belly mower. Went out this AM and now there is a 3'pool of oil under my PTO. Never leaked a drop before. While I have the belts off thought I should fix the leak. I have an operators manual but not any tech manuals.
#1 do I need to drain down my rearend oil?
#2 Had I better be ready to catch a bunch of oil when I take it apart?
#3 What all needs to come apart?
#4 Is the seal something an autoparts store should have?
#5 Is this one of those old style thick seals that can be replaced with 2 newer style thin seals?
#6 Am I getting as bad as Allen in Neb to be wrenching on something every week?
Thanks,
Paul

Hey Paul -

#1 - If you park your tractor with the front end facing downhill (or the rear wheels on substantial blocks....) you can probably change the seal without draining the transmission.

#2 - However if you do elect to drain it have (2) empty 5 gallon buckets at the ready. (Don't ask how I know this...)

#3 - Simply remove the two capscrews holding the PTO bearing housing to the transmission, then pry/tug! The bearing housing w/seal SHOULD slide right off. If you are careful you can re-use the existing gasket. Otherwise butter the gasket surface with RTV gasket maker when you put it back together.

#4 - I kinda doubt NAPA, etc will stock the seal. But if you take the IHC part number off the existing seal any good bearing house can cross it to a National or Chicago Rawhide substitute - and they likely WILL have it in stock.

#5 - The new seal will be less than 1/2 the thickness of the old one. So you can install 2 seals if you wish. However my experience is a single thin seal, positioned in the housing so the seal lip runs on an unworn section of the shaft works just fine - the 2nd seal is unnecessary.

#6 - Geez - I don't know.... My opinion: Constantly wrenching keeps one's mind sharp. So I guess then it's a GOOD thing!!

No, you are not as bad as Allan, but at least the two of you are getting it done. I seem to just let time slip away sitting here in front of this computer. To answer your question, yes, you will lose some oil, set a 5 gallon bucket under it. The original seal is a rather thick seal which might be still available if you knew where to look, but it would be a tough search. Case-IH will have the new, thinner seal. I installed two of them in my M, some folks maintain that the new seal is so much better that only one is needed.

I should add that the entire PTO assembly does not have to come out. I think there is a sort of cap, held on with 4 bolts. Take this off, and the seal will be inside of it. Might be a bit of a job getting the old one out. You might have to "wreck" it, but hey, it's already no good.
