Farmall Super C fluids

Hello all. I just acquired a 1953 Farmall Super C w/2 pt. fast hitch, standard pto and side pulley. It leaks a lot; all minor but widely. For levels, the water is oi; the current oil level is ok. The axle case level is ok (small plug on the rear). The hydraulic fluid level is ok, (left side plug, high) but I don't know about the trans. case. Is that seperate from the axle housing and does it use a different fluid and have a different check point?

Where are the axle and trans. filled? On the deck plate by the base of the shift lever is what appears to be a fill plug. Is this for the trans or the trans and the axle? If this is a fill plug it's going to be difficult to remove as its quite worn. Any suggestions or alternatives to this plug?

What is the recommendation for the various fluids, oil, trans, axle? What engine oil is best as to weight? Is a synthetic blend oil advisable?

What's the recommended mixture for the radiator? This tractor has previously been very much worked but has also probably sat for considerable periods. Are there any recommended additives that would really help in regard to prolonging the current various seals?

I got this tractor to put it right to work this weekend and hope to use it for at least 100 hours before needing a major tear down. I won't have time to send away for the big manual so any help with these questions would be appreciated. Thanks, Ed

Paul - Thanks for the reply. I have a small plug, about 5/8, on the right rear though, on the very end of the main axle gear box and level with the centerline of the axles, close to the pto housing but not on it. Would that be it?

If this is a drain plug and not a level plug (like the two motor oilpan units)how do I monitor the correct oil level in the trans/axel/pto unit?

Do you have a thought about using synthetic blend oil in the engine?

Final question, any idea of what a reasonable labor charge would be to replace a broken axle on a C?

You're right about liking the Super C. It's an absolutely beautiful machine. And that 2-pt. fast hitch is a wonder. I've used an H for a number of hours and it's just not the same.

Hi Ed, If you want to use a synthetic oil I'm sure that would be just fine, heck maybe better. Anything you put in it will be better than they had in 1953. Unless the rear end leaks a lot I doubt you would need to check it more than once a year. My dads old C has a constant slow drip from the end of one axle over the last five years and I still cant tell the level has dropped any. I guess this could be due to condensation of water in the oil. A few drops of that crap on the floor looks like a lot.

The drain for the rearend is right above the drawbar. You need to swing the drawbar to one side and then use a rachet to remove it. Not sure if it is 3/8" or 1/2" but it does have a square recess for it. The full check plug is just below the belt pulley on the right rear of the rear end.

The tranny and the axel and the pto get their oil from the same source. And yes the big plug up by the gear shift is where you fill it. There is a check plug I think on the left hand side toward the rear on the rear end. Holds around 5 gal of 90 weight oil. As far a motor oil they call for 30 weight but 10-40 or 15-40 of whatever your brand is will be fine. I do my antifreeze just like I do my cars. 50/50. I think you will like your Super C. I love mine.

I forgot to say that I use a large ratchet ext. "the square end" to remove those big fill plugs for the rear end.
