I just replaced the 6 Volt battery on my '39 A Farmall and cleaned and polished up the cables. After doing so, the new battery starts the tractor and the lights work.... but the amp meter shows a negative charge when the tractor starts.

I think I need to reset the polarity of the generator. How would someone go about reversing the polarity on a 68 year old Delco generator?

Pete

Peter - Simply jumper the BAT and ARM terminals at the cutout (or regulator) with the engine shut down. The connection need only be made for an instant - you may see a small spark when connection is made.

Thanks... I thought that is what I tried yesterday, but I'll give it another try.

Positive Ground? in reply to Peter Hatlestad, 05-31-2007 11:56:32
You say, "68 year old generator," which leads me to believe you are using the original ignition system.

It is probably positive ground. Originally almost all these tractors were. If you install the battery like you would in your car, with the negative terminal grounded, you just might kill ("let the smoke out of") the generator and/or regulator.

If, however, you have a 12 volt conversion, all bets are off.

It's a positive ground and I installed the battery correctly. I does shows a 10 amp discharge when the lights are on and the engine is off. As I would expect. It started doing this about a day before I replaced the battery.

When I arch the "A" generator pol to the "battery" terminal pole On the Voltage Regulator ... to reset the polarity it sparks... but it doesn't reset the polarity as I would hope.

Pete - Could be the ammeter is wired backward!

With the engine shut down, turn on the lights. The ammeter should indicate 10 amps or so discharge. However if it indicates CHARGE, swap the wires at the two ammeter terminals to make it read correctly.

However you find the ammeter IS indicating correctly, it showing discharge when the engine is running at speed says the generator is not functioning.

I figured it out!!!! It was a dead short in the switch box. There are two insulated gromets that the amp gauge is hooked up to on the back that keeps it from rubbing on the bracket that holds it in place. One of those grommets was missing and it amp meter was dead shorting on that the bracket...

Thanks for sharing your thoughts...
