#@**I !! My M is locked up

Awhile back I posted that my muffler was loose on the exhaust manifold and I got a whole lot of water in my crankcase and cylinders. Well, I was pretty quick to change the oil, but I wasn't able to get it started afterwards, so it's been sitting for quite some time now. The foot switch starts breathing fire when I try to turn it over, so I concluded that it must be stuck (turning the fan by hand confirms this). I put some ATF fluid in each cylinder and let it soak for a day and a half. Then I took the plugs out and tried to pull it to get the crank to turn over and it just skids the tires when I let out the clutch. It must be pretty bound up. Any ideas on what I might do next, aside from pulling off the head to inspect further. Any miracle juice out there that might be better than the ATF. Some of it got past the rings, because I cracked the oil drain plug and I got some red fluid. Thanks for the help.

Well it is more than likely not stuck very badly. Old has the best answer of those given. others are good too (except pulling it). If the starter button was hot, the starter button needs to be replaced. they should never get excessively hot. Much of your cranking voltage (and current is going there) Replace it first. Then make sure the valves are not stuck. Remove the velve cover, and tap each rocker arm with a plastic mallet to make sure they are moving. Then bump the switch as Old indicates. Putting the hand crank on the front, (or making a crank driver out of a cheap deepwell socket that will allow a breaker bar to be put on it) then weighting the breaker bar with one fifty pounds of weight, will assist the starter in bumping it around. I recommend that you loosen the rocker arm hold down bolts. stuck valves will skid the tires untill it bends the push rods, Also when pulling to unstick an engine the clutch will sometimes fail before the pistons will move. Good Luck

If your engine is stuck, brake fluid works well to free up the engine.

Just for the heck of it, pull the starter and make sure that its not binding. Turning the fan by hand doesnt mean anything, as the belt can be tight enogh to keep it from spinning by hand. It was spinning after you changed the oil right, so chances are you blew most of the water out then. Id pull the starter, aint but two bolts and a nut. What do you have to lose?

I did take the starter out and it spun separated from the tractor. I did get a quite a bit of water to blow out of the cylinders after I changed oil, but apparently there was still enough in there, I guess.

Have you put the starter back in and tried it?

Yes, I did install it and tried it again. Due to the excessive load against it, the old boy just can't muster enough energy to even make the engine bump.

You can damage the gear train by pulling that tractor or worse. You probably need to pull the head and soak those pistons with some more ATF.
You may need to pull the oil pan and use a piece of 2x2 oak and tap on those rods after removing the rod caps. Hal

StevenL, as stated by others do NOT!!!! pull that tractor to unstick it. You will if not already cause more damage to things such as bearings and I have seen many connecting rods bent by doing this.

TIME. It took time to set it up, now a little time for the ATF to work. You have the right idea other than that. Good luck!

Take and leave the plugs out. Fill each cylinder with gasoline. Let it set about 5 minutes and pull your tractor in 5th gear. I"ve fooled with several engines that were stuck from moisture and this is the best thing I"ve found. If it still won"t spin over try pulling it with the tractor in reverse to spin the engine backwards. Stand back because it"ll blow gas all over everything when it comes loose! If this doesn"t work you"re probably going to have to remove the head. By the way, if it does work you"re going to have to change the oil! Hope this helps.

I did a search on "stuck engine" and got a few hits with some useful info. If anyone would care to comment further, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

I do a lot of tractors that have had stuck engines. #1 NEVER EVER PULL one. You can brake rods and other parts doing that. Heres what I do and out or 20 plus engines it has worked on all but 2. Fill the cylinders with tranny fluid, put the plugs back in. Let it sit a few days, check every day that the cylinders are still full of fluid. After about a week pull the plugs back out and put in a good 12 volt battery. Use the starter and hit the button with short fast taps, DO NOT HOLD the button for more then a second. Watch the crank pulley and if its going to pop loose you will see it slowly start to move and then faster and fast till its spining over good.

Old, I just wrote a doc and posted it to my website, on how to post pics on these forums. You should write up how to unstick an engine and post it to yours.

My uncle thought he could pull his M once, had a corn picker on it, when he dumped the clutch, broke all the main bearings. As one guy put it, it did not rust up over night, it will NOT free up over night.

Make an adapter to hook up an air hose, that has 18mm threads that screws into the spark plug hole. Remove the rocker arms make sure all the valves are shut, pour in some ATF, and then hook up the air hose. An adjustable regualtor onthe air hose works best, or up to a 150 psi. Maybe try to hook the hose up to all 4 cyls with some ATF,,, it will help push the fluid past the pistons, while you have the air hooked up, hit the starter button,,, if its not stuck hard, it will pop right loose, but, you got to get the cyls cleaned out asap, so think of pulling the head in the near future, or, keep flushing the cyls with some sort of cleaner,,, paint thinner mineral sprits, diesil fuel, and keep rotating it with the starter once in a while to blow the cyl out, or tear it down as soon as you get it unstuck. Hope this helps. I used an old spark plug, with the porcilin (spellin) broke out and welded a fitting that works with the air hose, welded the two together. Better yet, pull the manifold off, if it looks really bad in the ports,,, dont try to start it,, all that rust will go right into the motor, and it wont run for long. ChadS
