Gaskets vs RTV or Permatex

I am rebuilding the rear half of my 1929 Regular now, and the gaskets for the bull gear housings and such are no longer available. What would the pros and cons be of just using RTV or such instead of gaskets? There is no pressure built up inside, so that is not a concern. It would just have to hold in the gear oil. On my F-20, I made my own gaskets, and that worked out OK. It cost money and was time consuming. I am wondering if RTV would do as well so I can avoid this step.

Have seen a lot of posts on this site that say the Farmall gods would not approve anything but a gasket but I have been using the RTV sealer for 40 years and have never had a problem with it.

GM has been using RTV on vehicles for a good number of years. It was a little difficult to get the pan loose. I inserted a thin blade putty knife and it pop off. I used RTV when I reinstalled the pan it never leaked. You don't need to worry about the gaskets being aligned
either. Hal

Many of the newer vehicles, etc. are put together with just RTV type sealers and no gaskets. Honda is one of them that has their own "Hondabond" that works great.

As long as the thickness of the gasket isn't needed to set a clearance, you should be fine with just sealer.

Yeah, we have a robot that applies a sealant plus a rubber rope gasket to our engines. (GM)

I do it all the time. Heck, I even use a high temp. gasket sealer on old head gaskets. I just torque tehm an extra 5 psi.
