Bob: If the steering wheel shaft has no end movement those bearings will be fine.

Usually most of the problem is two woodruff keys on the vertical shaft in steering box. Inside the gear has one and also the steering control arm has one. Between them, and if bad enough one can get over a full turn of free travel on the steering wheel.

Hugh, This loose steering problem comes up a lot on these offset farmalls. Several years I was at a local Case-IH dealer and I asked if there would be anything wrong with welding the gear to the shaft. I was surprised to hear something like "we fix alot of them that way." Have you ever heard of this? Do you think it would create any future problems?

Hugh,

I didnt do the work on our 140 so I'll have to just give you what I know. The guy that does a lot of my work said it wasnt the woodruff key on mine but a short pin, about two inches long. It goes thru the shaft and over time wears out and the steering starts to kind of go. Its an easy fix but one that really needs to be tended too.

Ordered a new oil filter for the 140 today. Girl at Case is kind of flirting with me. I better order more stuff.

Bob,

Two weeks ago we had one that the steering went out on. Found out it had been loose for a year and the Meskins kept driving it. Was a wore out pin. Had a new hole drilled and it works fine now. You have to take the axle off to get to all the stuff in there. I bet yours is wore out too.

When the steering went out the guy ran into a customers truck, of course the brakes didnt work either. We ended up buying the truck. Busted the tie rods, radiator, and one light on the tractor. Figure that one pin cost us about seven thousand.

Dont even ask me if I was pissed.
