Had to pull the genny so thought I might as well pull the thermostat housing and check it. Remember I wrote that the engine seemed to be running cool and could a thermostat fail in the open position? And I could see the coolant running into the radiator immediately after start. Well the thermostat didn't fail in the open position. It failed completely. Came out in three pieces. New one at IH is 24.95! Now no coolant transfer at start up.

Nice to know that it was a fairly simple solution.

I'm assuming 3-pieces means that it was rusted away?

Yep! Now for those who wonder how the gauge and cooling system ought to work. This SH has new radiator, new gauge, new thermostat, new belts, new coolant, new pressure cap. Now on start, no visible coolant flow into radiator. After 8-10 minutes, medium idle, gauge goes to green, about to the 'U' in 'Run'. Then thermostat opens, coolant flow visible into radiator, gauge drops to the 'L' in 'COLD' Textbook, picture perfect, like new in 54! Have a new to me 9 ft 1100 IH mower hooked up, two way hydraualics, mower totally reconditioned, guards, bar, shoes, cylinder, grass rods; ready to make some hay if the forecast doesn't show rain. Last year we couldn't buy it. This year we're working around it. Going to be a record setting year for crops in SD.

Dad says it's the best looking hay crop he's seen in over five years! (SW ND) They have had 1.40" in the last day or so. He thinks maybe the boat should be gassed up before it gets much deeper in the yard!

I'm hoping to get some acres gone over with my new to me IH 120 balanced head mower. Now we have a 100, 120, and an 1110... just need more tractor operators!
