706 Gas need alternator wiring help...

We repainted and rewired our 706 tractor a while back and now the battery isn't getting charged. The battery is good and so is the alternator. (had both tested) I think I may have it wired wrong. It is aftermarket replacement wiring harness and a Delco alternator. It has a bolt on the back and a two prong plug on the side. What wires go where on the alternator and where do those wires run to on the engine? Thank you for your help!

Might be easier if you tell us how you've got it wired. Which alternator do you have? The first 706's had a generator, and the late ones had a Delco 10DN alternator. Many that were converted from generator to alternator have a Delco 10SI. The 10DN uses a external regulator, located behind the "kick panel" between the clutch and brake pedals. Your two small wires from the alternator connect to this regulator. I personally do not like the 10DN as they are more expensive, and have more connections and that external regulator (more things that could fail). Many DN equipped machines have been converted to an SI. The easiest way to tell which one you've got- the terminal on the alternator where your two small wires plug into is square and labled "R" and "F" on the DN, while the SI has a rectangular terminal labled "1" and "2", and might have a third prong sticking out, which is used to feed a tach in some applications.

No doubt that you do not have the correct wiring harness . If it was a gen . model and ya up graded to and alt. then ya got a problem . Tryen to be cheap is not always the way to go . I have noway of showen ya the correct wiring for your tractor as i have all the wiring diagrahms but not enough computer smarts to pull them off one of my discs to send ya . A couple years ago my computer smart daughter scaned all the I H wiring digrahms to a couple disc's for me before she left for collage just before my old scanner took the big dump . So i can not even drag the books out and scan both of the 706 one for ya . And you will need both to figure this one out as to where you can cut and splice to make it work.
