I am having a constant hydraulic overload on the engine. The only way to relieve the engine load is to operate the hydraulic system. On two previous occasions I cured the situation by removing the valve block and cleaning the tiny 300 mesh screen which is fitted to the small ball check valve.I have mislaid my shop manual,so no longer have a trouble shooting guide.I noted that the small pin to prevent loss of the tiny ball bearing was missing so I fitted a new retaining pin. However I do not know if there is a spring required to seat the ball.If so then it has been lost.I just finished this chore and test ran the tractor. I still have the same overload.I am hoping someone can help out on this problem. Thanx

"THE Joe Evans" . . .wow! . . . Great to hear from you! Your website is at the top of my favorites list! I discovered your article right when I needed help to troubleshoot the hydraulics difficulties I was experiencing with the Fasthitch on my 340U, and it was extremely helpful. It encouraged me to tear into mine. In fact I"m getting ready to reinstall it right now. In the past year I"ve referred your article to many folks, as it certainly is vastly superior to any of the IH Blue Ribbon manuals.

I appreciate the time you put into developing it, and hope you"ll continue to write more . . . I enjoy your writing style.

Your words make the effort put into that all the more worthwhile. You're most welcome, but I should be thanking you for the notoriety.

The problem(s) we experienced with those hydraulics just drove us all nuts, but restricted time and resources lent themselves into not getting the work done. I simply got fed up with all that crap and tore into it.

While the I&T manual for the -60 series is OK, it's a little lacking in troubleshooting ideas, IMO. So...the repair was certainly going to be a learning experience, thus I documented it for posterity's sake hopefully making it useful for others experiencing the same woes. It appears to have met my goals.

I had a lot of fun doing that, and perhaps more is on the horizon. Just got done fixing the PS cylinder, piston and sector shaft on the 460 as well as replacing the upper bolster casting where all these items set up housekeeping. Turned out to be easier than I had suspected, but it helps to have a brawny brother around to horse that casting! Might do something about that although I neglected to take pics.

Thank you!

Did you ever fix the TA on that 460? Recall your article mentioned that being one of your other goals. I"d love to see a story on that someday!

Funny you mention that. The 460 is in the shop with most of the sheetmetal off of it because of the front-end fix. The tear down was going to be a two-parter: front end and TA. I "need" the 460 for our upcoming Fair in two months, and I'm now hedging on heading into a TA project right now.

Regardless, there will DEFINITELY be a full report on a TA fix. Dad "fixed" it many years ago, but that didn't turn out to be long-lived, plus some seals were rolled or installed incorrectly allowing the tractor to leak profusely and from places that don't have places. You can always tell when I was running the shuttle at the Fair with the 460: it dribbled Hy-Tran on the asphalt leaving "tracks". At least that was testimony that I was doing my volunteer duty at the Fair. No argument as to whose tractor it was!

Has this 460 got a fast hitch?

If so make sure the lever for the fast hitch is not traveling to far to the raised postion.

If it is out of adjustment it will try to raise the fast hitch farther than the cylinder will let it.
