Can anybody explain to me the meaning of a Stage 1 versus Stage 2 Farmall H? I am considering purchasing an H, and this seems to be a meaningful distinction. Is one better than another for any specific use, or for reliability or, say, cold weather? Please help me out if you"re able.
Thank you.

why not stage 3! in reply to Up North Louie, 06-06-2007 18:31:06
how about stage 3! although farmall never produced any offically you could have fun with it. But just as long as you know if you see one it is not an orignal! I have seen 4 in my life and all have been pictures, never in person. Heck try and find a stage 3 SH-TAVCHLP! those really get the looks and will have folks talking.

ALL H's are stage 1's if you want to think of them like that. The last 10,000 Super H's built in late 53 through oct of 54 are stage II. What this means is that they have live hydrolic pump, and not one driven trough the trans. There are a few other diffrences but that is the big one. A good H can be had for $1,200 or less depending on area. A good Stage II Super H, will be over $2,500. The H is a very reible tractor starts great in the cold and are very handy sized, not to big not to small. If you want live hydro, you can mount a pump on a H, other changes are needed too but that can be ocomplished.

Thank you :-) The tractor I am looking at has the live hydraulics you speak of and an after-market 3-point to boot. The price would seem to be right at $1500, if it starts and runs and doesn't smoke a lot, would you say ? I looked and didn't see a lot of welding, the sheet metal is good, but the paint is not, although that's not really a consideration. The tires look to be about 60-70 %. I have yet to see it start and run.

Sounds like a good H you got there. Check the serial number and then loook on the side of the web page here and see what year it is. since it has the live hydrolics it should have the battery under the seat and there should be a big "cast iron box" under the gas tank that is the res. for the pump. if all that is there then it may infact be a Stage II Super. Finally check the cast codes on it theres one on the engine right in back of the distributor, theres anouther on operators platform (where the shifter is) and theres even more on the axels. If it has Y is a 53 and Z is 54, if not then it may say O = 45 P= 46 etc....then its a H that has had the live hydros put on after. in either case that sounds like a good machine there the 3pt alone is worth $300+ I would good for it, there great tractors!!!
