as stated below these are easy starting tractors when you have everything right, as far as the starter not engaging is it doing anything?? it may need to be pulled apart and cleaned , it is a fairly easy job to do the hardest thing is getting the brushes back around the armeture but it is not that difficult,,, when you have it apart take some fine sandpaper or emery to the armature and clean it up shiny, then take a round wire wheel if you have one and shine up the magnets,, put it back together and I would be 99% sure it will whirl for you,, before you do that though be sure all your connections are making good contact and are all cleaned up, that is the easiest way to loose power from the battery on any 6 volt systemm.. they really didnt mess anything up by hooking it neg ground wioth 6 volts,, they spark just wouldnt be as hot to the plugs,, [IF this has a magneto it wouldnt make a difference,, but it probably has a dist,, running only a few minutes is more than likely fuel related,, after you get the starter to turn the engine over, check your regular things,, fuel to carb,, must be a steady stream, not a trickle,, fuel making it to the carb?,, then check your spark, from the key to coil--power? coil to points power? -- points to plugs power?? check to be sure your plug wires are on correctly and that your points are gapped correctly,, when you get stumped come back there will be plenty of help available to you,, good luck, hope this helps, these are easy machines to get running and keep running , pat
