i just found out by a ih expert that my 44 h might not need major work. when he herd it run he said it sounds like a intake valve. so i probally have a bad valve spring! im glad to because this h has been upgraded to fire crater pistons and has alot of power. i have not drove another h with as much power as this one. it would put up a good fight with my super h and it has a m and w rocket gov on it. ill have it running by next week! parts pending..... im so happy now! hee hee

A better way to hold that valve closed would be to adapt an old sparkplug to an air hose and screw it into the sparkplug hole and use compressed air to hold the valves closed to change springs. This would also indicate how good the vavles are seating as a bad seal would not allow this method to work and then you know to grind the valves. This adapter may be avaible from a parts store; otherwise it is easy to make. Armand

I wouldn't get too exited until I was sure that was what it was. Can you get a vaccum gage on the intake manifold? That will tell you a lot. Boy it sure would be cool if that was all it is! A weak spring can let a valve get stuck open. You should have seen the valve springs on my old 10-20. Thing sat for so long they compressed and stayed there. Taken off and lined up on the bench they looked like a topo map of the rockies. If you can get one grab a "on head" valve spring compressor. get some cotton clothesline rope and stuff it down the spark plug hole on cyl that is the problem to keep valve up and gently roll the crank over till the piston bumps the rope. It makes them a lot easier to change than pulling the head off when you don't have to. Gook Luck with it!
