Farmall H light duty PTO?

My 1941 H has a small diameter PTO shaft. I have heard this referred to as the 'light duty' PTO. Just curious what difference there may be other than the actual output spline diameter. I have an adapter which converts it to the conventional diameter, and am thinking of putting a 3 point on it to run a bush hog (5 foot). Do you think I will run into any problems working it occasionally? Thanks for the advice!

Actually, AFAIK there's no "light-duty" to any of it. It's just that prior to a 1941 model midyear change, the H Farmall didn't have what's known as a "standard" [or "standardized," to the old-timers] PTO.

A lot of the earlier H's were converted by dealers or owners over the years. As Steven says, an overrunning clutch is a "gotta-have" item when running a bush hog...and a 5 footer on an H is a pretty good match.

You can get the overrunning coupler that has a female 1 1/8 and male 1 3/8.

I have both sizes from my H's - everything is the same except the size of the output shaft spline diameter.

Throw the adapter on and go to work!

If you are going to bush hog with your H, please get an over-run coupler for the PTO. If you don't the mower's momentum will force the tractor to continue moving after you push the clutch... good way to get in a wreck.

The early H's M's A's B's had the smaller 1 1/8" PTO, thats what they came with, there not light duty, that was the standard for the time. Around 42 I belive they switched to the larger 1 3/8" PTO the industury standard now. You should be all set running the adapator over it. I do it on my 38 Allis B and have now trubles.
