I am ready to begin reassembling the engine on my H. I have a service manual which provides me with torque specs, but I am not sure how to orient the pistons, e.g. will it matter if I'm 180 degrees off? I have a set of NOS aluminum flat-top pistons with part number 359656-R1 stamped into the top. I will either be able to read this number from the front or rear of the tractor, depending on which way they are installed. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I would look for a notch or an arrow that should face toward the front of engine. You may be able to determine by looking at the old pistons. The manual doesn't give any info either. Look on the underside of the piston. Hal

Jim, I appreciate your advice, but these are the flat top aluminum pistons, so there is no 'dome' to determine direction.

Sorry brain delay.
If there is a notch in the edge that goes forward. if no notch, others may know. JimN

The direstion is critical. The domes go away from the sparkplugs, filling part of the combustion chamber. Look at the head, the domes fit one way well, and might hit if wrong. The wrist pin is actually not precisely in the center of the piston to help center the thrust from the hot gasses pushing on the piston, while the rod is at a slight angle. The rod numbers are on the cam side of the block. JimN
